What Most of Us Do Not Know About Cats (Part 4)

I really can?t explain it, but ever since I was a little kid, I absolutely love animals. In particular, I love cats (No offense to dogs! I also love them, but I prefer cats more). There is no specific reason why I have come to love these wonderful creatures, but I guess one reason would be that they can relieve you from your stress whenever you pet them. Another good reason is that cats are very good mice hunters as well as these felines can easily be taken care of at home.

Are you a cat lover? If so, I would like to share you some wonderful facts about cats you might not know. Since there are quite many of them, I would just have to divide them in separate posts. Please note that these are not in particular order.

  • Domestic cats spend about 70% of their day sleeping and 15% of the day grooming.

  • It is a common belief that cats are color blind. However, studies have shown that cats can distinguish between red and green; red and blue; red and gray; green and blue; green and gray; blue and gray; yellow and blue, and yellow and gray.

  • Only four cats really roar: lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars.

  • A cat has four rows of whiskers. The top two rows of a cat?s whiskers can move independently of the lower two rows. This allows maximum perception of the cat?s immediate surroundings.

  • A cat uses its whiskers to determine if a space is too small to squeeze through. The whiskers act as feelers or antennae, helping the animal to judge the precise width of any passage.

  • The lightness of a feline?s tread can be attributed to the fact that they walk on their toes ? the soles of their feet rarely touch the ground. The pillow-like balls of their paws allow them to prowl noiselessly in the wild.

  • A cat can be either right-pawed or left-pawed.

  • Cats outnumber dogs by millions as house pets. In the US alone, there are about 66 million. In the US, 37% of houses have at least one pet cat. In the UK, about 25% of houses have at least one pet cat. In Australia, 26% of houses have at least one pet cat. There are about 500 million pet cats in the world.

  • 95% of cat owners admit they talk to their cats.

  • A cat can jump as much as seven times its height.
