So, is it destiny or free will?
Are we marionettes on a string waiting for someone to pull our strings? Or are we people who are free roam the Earth and do as we please? Or is it a bit of both?
For those of us who need a little bit of that ?cosmic dope? we like every day to understand our future, the first two questions are always asked but when it comes to the third, it is a bit of a grey area to fully understand.
This is the dilemma that the movie, ?The Adjustment Bureau? poses to all of us these days with a rather unique answer?
Plot
David Norris (Matt Damon), a New York State Congressman meets Elise (Emily Blunt), who is hiding in a stall, while rehearsing his concession speech. They hit it off very well despite the circumstances that David is in and who proceeds to make a winning speech that many people remember for a long time to come.
Yes, Elise is the woman that he has always dreamed about, and as we find out later was in that hotel bathroom for a particular reason.
A few months later, David goes off to work and meets Elise on the bus again ? only this time, their meeting was not ?supposed? to happen, thanks to the slacking off of an Adjustment Bureau agent, Harry Mitchell (Anthony Mackie)!
Yes, they have a ?plan? for David Norris but she?s not supposed to be in it?
Incidentally, they also reset his closest friend?s memory (also known as an adjustment) so that he does not divert from his plan as well which David manages to see. Of course, he is threatened to not say anything about the bureau?s activities else he will suffer the fate. David is also informed that he should not meet Elise again, and the number that she gives him is burnt.
Strangely enough, after three year and while on his way to work, he sees Elise again, and this is when the fun begins?
Yes, it?s free will versus the plan for David Norris, which he later understands as to why it isn?t his ? thanks to the Dark Ages caused by humanity when they last had free will.
If David is allowed the opportunity of ?free will? for choices as big as these, in being with Elise he will also lose the opportunity of being the President of the United States, according to the plan. And this is what the Bureau cannot afford to have?
Of course, at the end of it all, love triumphs over all ? and David is willing to forego his shot at the Presidency to be with Elise (awww!) because he thinks she?s the perfect woman for him! God, every man loves dancers, don?t they?
To say the least, it?s a clever movie that has some cute concepts about the Life we lead, what hats are really used for and the inspiration that love can create in people who want David to stick to the plan that has been made for him.
But David wants to do his own thing since he already knows the ?truth??
Elise doesn?t understand what?s going on with David until much later, but will it be too late to craft a life together without any plans? Will ?The Adjustment Bureau? succeed in tearing them apart? Or will the two of them find a way to stay together while bravely stepping into the ?unchartered territory? that is Life?
And as for the answer to the age-old question: Is it destiny or free will? You can say it?s both.

In Closing
With a movie such as this, there is bound to be special effects but they don?t overpower the overall story of the movie but step in helpfully whenever needed to enhance the storyline. The casting of the movie was just fine ? Matt and Emily make a fine pair while Anthony does well in a supporting role. Nice story but the romance kind of takes away the ?thrills? that could have otherwise been pushed to the limit with a storyline such as this one. The ending is just a bit weak, you know.
Without this, it lacks the ?punch? that most memorable thrillers are made of. There?s no even one threatening moment in the movie except for the menacing moments spent with ?The Hammer? that makes you get to the edge of your seat.
To say the least, watching it once is enough ? not unless you?re a Matt Damon or Emily Blunt fan!
