In all likelihood, does this indicate breast cancer?I am a 38 yr old woman with a distant history of breast cancer on my Mom?s side(Great Aunt) and my Dad died in Nov. from lung cancer. Recently, my Dr. found a lump in my left breast at about the 4:00 area. A mammogram showed that the lump was ?dense breast tissue?. However, the mammogram also showed some microcalcifications in roughly the same area. I do not have any pain. There are about 10 ? 15 specs in a small cluster. The microcalcifications are all very tiny but vary in shape and relative size and appear to me to be in a linear pattern. The radiologist categorized me as a bi-rad 3 and recommended follow up with another mammo in six months. However, my Dr. has refered me to see a breast surgeon now to consider the option of doing a biopsy now instead of waiting for another mammo. With my background and all of this info., should I be worried? Does anyone have any helpful info. or stats or experience with this? I am freaking out a little.

I think your doctor is erring on the side of caution ? which is no bad thing.
Breast cancer at your age is unusual ? only 5% of all those diagnosed with it are under 40.
Hereditary breast cancer is rare; only 5 ? 10% of all breast cancer cases are hereditary, and breast cancer diagnosed after the age of 50 is even less likely to be hereditary.
One case of breast cancer in a third degree relative isn?t hereditary; a sign that breast cancer MAY be hereditary due to a rare inherited faulty gene is when several members of the same side of a family have had it, especially if some were diagnosed at a younger than usual age.
And your father having had a different type of cancer doesn?t increase your risk of breast cancer; you don?t inherit a general tendency to get cancer ? in the fewer than 10% of cases where cancer is hereditary within a family, it is the same type of cancer.
Most breast lumps, even in women over 50 (who make up 80% of all those diagnosed with breast cancer) are not cancerous; fewer than 20% of breast lumps considered suspicious enough for biopsy turn out to be cancer.
