Sometimes you wonder where they get the idea to fund certain studies.
The latest such study shows that men who drink more than six cups of coffee per day have a 60% lower risk of lethal prostate cancer compared to men who don?t drink coffee at all. ?This is great news for those of us who have a hard time stopping, once we?ve had our first cup.
But you have to wonder who got the idea to fund a study on coffee and prostate cancer, let alone a study of men who drink seven or more cups of coffee a day. ?Even on my best day, I don?t reach that number. ?And, though I do know many a prodigious coffee drinker, it?s hard to imagine what proportion of the male population actually falls into this category.
But it seems that the anti-cancer benefits extend even to those of us who drink a meager one to three cups per day. ? Men in this category saw a 30% lower risk of lethal prostate cancer than those who abstain.
Now, why might cancer lower your risk of prostate cancer? ?The researchers who conducted the study believe it could result from coffee?s beneficial effect on glucose metabolism, its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties and its impact on sex hormone levels. ?Apparently all four of these factors can play a role in aggravating prostate cancer.
The researchers also stress that, curiously enough, it?s not likely the caffeine in coffee that lowers prostate cancer risk: The same results were found in men who drank decaffeinated coffee as in those who drank the real thing.
So, should men start pounding coffee? ?I?m not sure. ?I tend to think disorders like improper glucose metabolism, inflammation, oxidation and sex hormone levels often occur to begin with solely because we?re eating the wrong foods. ?I?ve spoken at length before how the way we produce animal products these days increases dramatically the ratio of inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids to anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, and how refined carbohydrates appear to wreak havoc on glucose metabolism. ?Avoid these disorders and you may not need to drink coffee to resolve them.
But we need a lot more research to know any of this for certain. ?In the meantime, this makes me feel somewhat less sheepish about the large quantities of coffee I drink. ?And if it lowers my risk for lethal prostate cancer, maybe it has some other benefits.
Would you feel better drinking coffee (or seeing the men in your life do so) after hearing about this study?
