Fooducate: The Award Winning iPhone Nutrition ... - Discuss Diabetes

Andy BoyleAndy Boyle

Hemi Weingarten of Diabetes Nutrition by FooducateHemi Weingarten

As a member of the Patient Solutions Team within Sanofi US Diabetes, I?m excited to see the launch of the new app, Diabetes Nutrition by Fooducate. The original Fooducate is an app that explains what?s really inside grocery store products and grades them simply by scanning the barcode with a smartphone. Diabetes Nutrition by Fooducate is built on the same basic concept, but has specific features to help people with diabetes and pre-diabetes manage a healthier diet.

The founder of Fooducate, Hemi Weingarten, is here to explain more about the apps and how they help users make smarter food choices in the grocery store and at home.?

Q: Hi Hemi, thanks so much for your time today. Can you start by telling us a little about your background?

A: Believe it or not, I actually started professionally programming when I was just 14 years old. By my late twenties I switched over to marketing and business development. My entrepreneurial interests grew and I started a digital content company with two friends in the aftermath of the dot com bubble. We successfully sold our startup a few years later.

Q: Why did you decide to create the original Fooducate app?

A: Once I got married and our family started to grow, I took interest in the kinds of food my children were eating. One day, my wife brought home glow-in-the-dark yogurt and I was curious as to the color source. So I read the ingredient label for the first time in my life. There was one ingredient that was particularly startling, RED #40. I looked it up and discovered it is a potentially harmful food coloring banned in Europe because of possible links to health problems, but yet it is allowed in the United States. At that point, I realized there were not any useful tools to help consumers make smarter food choices. I decided to create an information resource for people to educate themselves about the food they eat.

I started Fooducate as a consumer blog in 2008 to help families like my own. I realized the potential of smartphones in 2009 and assembled a team to start working on an iPhone? app for Fooducate. The iPhone app was released in early 2011. An Android? version made its debut a few months later.

Q: Can you describe the app for us?

A: After you scan a barcode at the grocery store, Fooducate instantly shows a ?nutrition dashboard? with three core components:

    • A color-coded nutrition grade (e.g. ?A,? ?B+,? ?C-?), which is calculated using our scientific algorithm that analyzes the information on the product package, including the nutrition facts panel and the ingredient list.
    • A brief list with bullet point explanations of product highlights (good and bad).
    • The option to look at healthier alternatives.
Diabetes Nutrition by Fooducate app for iPhone
Diabetes Nutrition by Fooducate app

For example, say you scanned a cereal with almonds and cranberries expecting it to get an ?A? on the nutrition grade. You?re surprised that it only gets a ?C+,? but Fooducate explains it is because the product is not made with whole grains, it contains more sugar than Froot Loops? and uses a controversial preservative. Then, the app gives you suggested alternatives that rate from a ?B? up to an ?A-? by judging them on natural ingredients and low sugar content. Other great features of the app include the ability to compare two different foods side-by-side, creation of a healthy shopping list and access to real user reviews of the product.

Q: How does Fooducate differ from other nutrition apps?

A: Unlike many calorie or carb counting apps, Fooducate analyzes the actual ingredients list versus just the calorie or fat content. A product with zero calories could get a ?D? because it uses unsafe additives such as artificial colors and sweeteners.

We developed our product grading algorithms with the help of dietitians, nutrition labeling experts and nutrition profiling pioneer, Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D., of the University of Washington in Seattle. Fooducate currently grades more than 200,000 unique products and our list is growing all of the time.

Q: Wow, 200,000 products! How did you obtain so many?

A: We?ve built the database over the course of three years. We started with information from manufacturers, but not all of them had data easily available for us to use. Now, we are mostly relying on users who submit product information: when a user scans a product we don?t currently have in our system, he or she is asked to take three pictures: the front of package, the nutrition label and the ingredient list. We then key in the data of the most popular products into our database, and they get automatically graded. The next time a user scans that product, the app contacts our servers and is able to display the nutrition dashboard.

Q: The Diabetes Nutrition by Fooducate app launched recently. How does it differ from the original Fooducate app?

A: The diabetes app focuses on the special nutrition needs of people living with diabetes. The grading algorithm looks more carefully at calories and nutrition information such as carbohydrates, saturated fats and sodium. Compared to the original app, it is more lenient with artificial sweeteners. Additionally, there are many helpful suggestions and the grading system is catered to people living with diabetes. For example, a cereal that?s given a ?C+? in the original Fooducate app may get a ?C-? in the diabetes version.

Q: Fooducate was selected by Apple? as best iPhone health and fitness app in 2011. Did you have any idea it would be so successful?

A: When we started on the journey of creating the app, we all believed we were addressing a real need, but we did not know what to expect. The feedback and reviews from users were very positive from day one, which was a wonderful feeling. This feedback has continued to be a great motivator for the Fooducate team and the positive accolades from Apple and the U.S. Surgeon General were pleasant surprises as well.

Thanks so much to Hemi for taking the time to share more information about Fooducate and Diabetes Nutrition by Fooducate. Users are definitely finding the apps beneficial and I?m excited to see what?s to come.

How Internet Marketers Can Fail in Email Marketing | Free Directory ...

If you?re a business owner, chances are, you have come across this web-based marketing strategy called email marketing. If you have but chose not to act on it, then you?re in a brink of risking your business into extinction.

Internet marketing includes practices such as social media marketing, article marketing, PPC (pay-per-click), SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or SEM (Search Engine Marketing), and email marketing. Among the most popular ones is email marketing. This practice entails the use of email to get in touch with clients and prospects.

People who are new in email marketing thought that once they sign up in one of the email marketing software, they?re already making it big. This is a misconception as success in email marketing is a combination of many things. Though there is no definite formula for succeeding in email marketing, there are sure ways to fail at it. If you want to fail at email marketing, try doing the following:

1. Absence of message customization

If you want to waste your time and money in sending email campaigns, then you have to send irrelevant messages to your contacts. Do this and you?re sure to have your emails ignored or worse deleted immediately by your clients and prospects.

2. Embedding broken links

One of the determinants of the success of email marketing is the rate of conversion. By embedding broken links, you can have poor conversion rate, making the entire process of email marketing useless.

3. Lack of campaign tracking

Without tracking your campaigns, there?s no way that you can improve your marketing strategy. Good thing, there is now this tracking feature found in almost all email marketing software. This feature will show the click on rates and the number of contacts who have opened your emails.

4. Poorly written copy

A poorly written content is as good as having no campaigns at all. So please, before you hit the ?send? button, make sure you have proofread your message.

5. Becoming a spammer

Sending unsolicited messages is spamming. Being labeled as a spammer is one of the sure ways to make your business fail in the virtual world. Avoid this from happening by only sending campaigns to clients who have chose to opt in.

Media autoresponder is Steven Porter?s version of the software. Installation is easy. Detailed installation information can be found here: media autoresponder software installation page.

Gmail composer goes to a simple popup, gives multitaskers freedom to fly

As much as Gmail shines when it's on the web, some of its most avid users stay in native apps for the multitasking; having to check a past message in the web client has usually meant putting the current draft on hold, or at least maintaining a near-photographic memory. Google wants to translate some of that desktop experience to the web through a new composition interface it's testing as of today. New messages start off in a shrinkable pop-up that lets us find old threads without having to put the new conversation on ice, even we're indecisive enough to leave multiple unfinished e-mail messages open. Other upgrades lurk in the background for the more focused among us, such as a pared-back composition interface, in-line photos and a reply box that dynamically adapts to the space it needs. Only those in the preview will see the Gmail update for now; Google is promising a wider launch in the months ahead that could save us all a few precious minutes each day.

Employee needs help: What can we do? ? Business Management ...

Q. Can we suggest psychiatric help for an employee we suspect may be having trouble with substance abuse? And can we require a random drug test?

A. Suggesting psychiatric help could be viewed as akin to requesting a medical examination, in which case it can be done only if it is for job-related reasons and is a business necessity. Suggesting psychiatric help could also support a claim that you perceived the employee to have a mental disability.

Refer the employee to your Employee Assistance Program (if you have one), or ask if you can provide any assistance. If the employee admits to a substance abuse problem, you could suggest a rehabilitation facility.

You can require a random drug test, but you should do so in the context of a drug testing policy. The policy should state the company?s prohibition on being under the influence of drugs or alcohol during work.

'DWTS' pro: I'll spank Apolo to get more points

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Craig Sjodin / ABC

Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff.

Apolo Anton Ohno admitted on Monday night?s episode of ?Dancing With the Stars? that he and pro partner Karina Smirnoff had had a fight just prior to last week?s performance. ?(The duo?s samba still managed to earn an impressive 27 points.)

The Clicker was in the post show press line to help grill the duo on what went down -- and learn how they rebounded with Monday night?s perfect score of 30 for their Viennese Waltz.

?I found it difficult to reach him,? Smirnoff said of working with the Olympic-winning athlete. ?I didn?t know which door to knock on to get the reaction out of him that I wanted. We were like an old married couple. Finally, we had a fight and laid it out on the table.?

What was the battle about?

?Chocolate,? Ohno responded, deftly trying to diffuse the situation.

Smirnoff didn?t shed more light on specifics, but she hinted that their conflict was born out of the fact that men and women are just plain different.

?I told him men love with their eyes and women love with their ears,? she said. ?And that he should just keep telling me sweet things.?

?(Fighting) sucked,? Ohno said. ?But we came back together. This week, we were significantly different -- it couldn?t have been forced. We had to mutually want to come forward and work on a dance that was meaningful and had a dual purpose. It was great.?

While differences led to some conflict, Smirnoff feels that she and her partner are also very much alike.

?Apolo is my first athlete,? she noted (not counting her season 5 pairing with pro boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.). ?Apolo has discipline, and he?s as stubborn as I am. That works perfectly in the ballroom. He usually lets me in, but when he doesn?t we start fighting.?

The couple?s perfect score from last night and the positive comments from the judges clearly show that the duo is capable of moving past any difficulties.

Injecting some humor into her post-show interview, Smirnoff joked that she has a plan for future dances with Ohno.

?I?m definitely incorporating more butt-slapping,? she quipped, referring to the taps on the rear end that Kirstie Alley gave Maksim Chmerkovskiy in the cast?s group dance, which earned the duo the coveted additional two points from the judges.?

?It that gets extra points,? Smirnoff mused, ?I?m going to spank Apolo till we get some.?

(AP) ? Wet snow and high winds spinning off the edge of superstorm Sandy spread blizzard conditions over parts of West Virginia and neighboring Appalachian states Tuesday, shutting one interstate as trucks and cars bogged down and knocking out power to many.

The National Weather Service said a foot and more of snow was reported in lower elevations of West Virginia, where most towns and roads are. High elevations in the mountains were getting more than two feet and a blizzard warning for more than a dozen counties was in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

At least 236,000 customers were without power in West Virginia early Tuesday. In Elkins, a city of about 7,000 people, power went out across town before dawn and the only lights were from passing snow plows as heavy, wet flakes piled up to about 8 inches.

The roofs of at least three homes collapsed under the weight of heavy snow, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said. No injuries were reported in the Tuesday accidents in Nicholas County. West Virginia National Guard troops helped the residents of the homes get to local shelters.

Tomblin says there's been no word of additional deaths or any serious injuries. Officials earlier reported a woman was killed Monday in a storm-related traffic accident in an area where about 5 inches of snow had fallen.

The governor is urging residents to stay off the roads. That will prevent mishaps and allow National Guard, Division of Highways and Division of Forestry crews to clear felled trees for utility repair workers.

Tomblin says forecasters estimate that the storm's brunt should clear the state by nightfall.

Authorities closed nearly 50 miles of Interstate 68 on either side of the West Virginia-Maryland state line for hours early Tuesday because of blizzard conditions and stuck vehicles.

More than 30 other highways and roads were closed in West Virginia by snow, ice, high water, and downed trees and power lines. Department of Transportation spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said. Schools were closed in at least 39 counties. Police rescued several stranded motorists on the interstate in West Virginia.

"It's a mess out there and people should stay home if they can until our first responders can get out there, clear the roads and get to those who need the most assistance," Fitzwater said.

On the Maryland side of I-68, a foot of snow triggered closures along a 40-mile stretch between LaVale and the West Virginia line.

Several westbound tractor-trailers jackknifed on Big Savage Mountain. Maryland State Police Sgt. Brian Broadwater said about 200 vehicles backed up behind the trucks. Travelers were turned around or detoured onto two-lane state highways that were also treacherous, prompting many to check into motels.

The depth of the early snow surprised some Appalachian residents in eastern Kentucky.

A tree heavy with snow fell on Claude Collier's truck Monday night in Jenkins, Ky. Collier, 50, says he has "never seen this much snow this early in the year." He said he and other residents lost power in the storm.

The storm also covered parts of the Virginia highlands, northeast Tennessee and northwest North Carolina.

At Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, park spokeswoman Dana Soehn reported 22 inches of snow at the highest elevations, with strong winds blowing drifts up to 4 feet deep.

Roads were closed throughout the park and a handful of hikers coming off sections of the Appalachian Trial on Tuesday morning reporting tangles of fallen trees and waist-deep drifts.

"We don't know exactly how many people are still up there, but we've not received any distress calls," Soehn said. "It's that heavy, wet snow, so it is difficult to plow."

(AP) ? Broadway, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center all remained dark Tuesday as superstorm Sandy left the New York entertainment industry fighting to go on with the show ? even if it meant performing for empty studios.

That was how David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon taped their late shows Monday night, leading to some remarkably quiet monologues. Letterman repeated the feat Tuesday, though Fallon brought in a usual crowd to his "Late Night" taping. The shows have been cautious about luring audience members out on stormy streets where many are still without power and the subway system remains down.

"Just like every night, we pretend the audience isn't here," Letterman explained to band leader Paul Schafer on Tuesday's "Late Show" before an empty Ed Sullivan Theater.

The talk show host ran through his monologue from his desk, not bothering to pause for laughs that wouldn't come: "I had to come in. I used up all my sick days," he said, adding: "That's a joke there."

After a Monday night of awkwardness ? which guest Seth Meyers compared to watching Charlie Rose "if he had a band and everybody was a little high" ? Fallon happily welcomed back a live audience.

"First off, thanks to our great audience for making it out to the show tonight," Fallon began his monologue Tuesday. "I'm so glad you're here because last night's audience was the worst."

Jimmy Kimmel, who brought his Los Angeles-based "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to Brooklyn for a week's worth of shows, was to host the ABC program live from the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Tuesday night after canceling Monday's show.

Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" both canceled Tuesday night's tapings.

Fallon said Tuesday that after Monday's show, "I realized how much I missed the sound of laughter and applause. I haven't heard that much silence since Kim Kardashian was asked to say something off camera."

As the city took account of the damage wrought by the storm, the aftermath of Sandy continued to cause the cancellations of film premieres, film and TV production and even that most unshakable performer: Bruce Springsteen.

The Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concert scheduled for Tuesday night at the Rochester Blue Cross Arena in upstate New York was postponed until Wednesday because of flight cancellations for the band and ticket holders.

The city revoked film permits for a second day Tuesday. The sets of "Smash," ''Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," ''30 Rock," ''Deception" and "Do No Harm" were closed, NBC said, and "SVU" won't tape Wednesday. Other series temporarily knocked out of production included "666 Park," ''Gossip Girl" and "Person of Interest."

Films forced to stop shooting include Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" and Akiva Goldsman's "Winter's Tale," and the Tuesday premiere of Joe Wright's Tolstoy adaptation "Anna Karenina" was canceled.

ABC's "Good Morning America," NBC's "Today" show and "CBS This Morning" aired live Tuesday with extensive storm coverage, though "GMA" was forced to cancel its planned Wednesday Halloween special.

Daytime shows were less successful, with production called off for "Live! With Kelly and Michael," ''Katie," ''The View" and "The Chew." ABC said work on all the programs would resume Wednesday.

All 40 Broadway theaters were closed, and while most hoped to open Wednesday, both "The Lion King" and "Mary Poppins" announced that Wednesday's shows would also be canceled.

The thriving downtown off-Broadway community was still assessing the damage and likely facing a longer time off. The superstorm forced the well-respected Vineyard Theatre in Union Square to cancel performances of its world-premiere production of "Checkers," which was to open Wednesday. And the staff of the SoHo Rep, just a few blocks south of Canal Street, was dealing with no power and some flooding in the basement, on a day that was supposed to be the first technical rehearsal of a play about African genocide by Jackie Sibblies Drury.

"You obviously can't do tech without electricity," said artistic director Sarah Benson, who added that the tight-knit community was helping each other.

"I've already been in contact with other theaters who are offering help and the community is pulling together," she said. "Everyone is going to support one another as best we can."

Two Broadway shows were even offering a special discount ? if you could walk to their theaters. Tickets to the Roundabout Theatre Company's productions of both "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" were going for $20 for Wednesday's matinee and evening shows to customers who show their MetroCards, made useless by the storm.

Many of the cultural institutions of New York remained shuttered. Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center canceled performances and the Metropolitan Opera and Radio City Music Hall were also closed. The 57th Street entrance to Carnegie Hall ? which also canceled Wednesday concerts ? was blocked by a street closure because of a dangling crane. The Metropolitan Opera said Tuesday that it planned to go ahead with its Wednesday evening performance of Thomas Ades' "The Tempest."

The Apollo Theater was forced to postpone its signature show, the Amateur Night finale, from Wednesday night to Nov. 14. Apollo president and CEO Jonelle Procope said finalists weren't able to travel to the event.

The financial hit for touring musicians will depend in part on how long it takes transit and other infrastructure to return to normal, said Gary Bongiovanni of Pollstar, the trade publication that tracks the concert industry. Atlantic City, where a lot of acts perform, was particularly hard hit. New York concert cancellations included those for Journey at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn and a Beacon Theater benefit concert for marriage equality that was to feature Rufus Wainwright, the National and They Might Be Giants.

"Everyone knows there is no shows in New York tonight, but what about Wednesday or Thursday ... when do you make the decision to try and drop things and rearrange your schedules?" he asked. "Financially, everyone is taking a hit on this thing, and you make the best of it like any other natural disaster."

The storm also jolted one of the gaming industry's biggest releases of the year. GameStop stores canceled planned midnight launches of the highly anticipated Ubisoft video game "Assassin's Creed III" throughout the Northeast, but Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter doesn't anticipate the storm will derail the interactive medium at the beginning of its busiest sales season.

"That won't impact overall game sales," Pachter said. "The people who stayed home last night will buy it tomorrow."

Most movie theaters on the East Coast in the path of the storm have been closed since Sunday night and many continued to be shuttered Tuesday. Clearview Cinemas said its 47 theaters in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were closed. AMC Theaters listed some 60 theaters in the area that were closed Tuesday, though some outside of New York could open later in the day. National Amusements, which runs Showcase Cinemas and Cinema de Lux locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts, said its theaters were open, aside from those without power.

Losing several days of box office for such a large area of the country would likely mean millions to Hollywood, though early weekdays are lesser movie-going days and current new releases ? "Cloud Atlas," ''Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D," ''Fun Size" ? were already attracting little interest.

Debuting this weekend is the animated Disney comedy "Wreck-It Ralph," the Paramount thriller "Flight" and the martial-arts "The Man With the Iron Fists."

"I think 'Wreck-It Ralph' is going to have a huge opening, but if it's less than expected, I think a lot of people are going to lay that on the doorstep of the hurricane," said Hollywood.com box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian. At the same time, he added: "A film like 'Wreck-It Ralph' could be the antidote to the hurricane for families looking for an escape. It's a very escapist, fun movie. We'll have to take a wait-and-see attitude."

Another movie was on the mind of one performer.

With the hashtag of "SandySucks," Lady Gaga tweeted: "I'm never watching Grease again."

Nielsen SoundScan confirmed the sales Tuesday night. The only other act to do so was 'N Sync.

Swift tweeted to her fans Tuesday night: "Thanks a million."

Microsoft: Windows Phone to catch up in apps

(AP) ? Microsoft launched a new version of its Windows Phone software with broad support from smartphone makers, cellphone carriers and app developers as the software company tries to position new Windows gadgets as strong alternatives to Apple and Android devices.

The company also promised to address one of the chief shortcomings with Windows Phone: the dearth of third-party applications relative to offerings for Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android system.

Windows Phone 8 is the successor to Windows Phone 7, which launched two years ago but has had little traction in the market. The new software will run on more powerful phones, with flagship models coming from Nokia, Samsung and HTC, starting this weekend overseas and later in November in the U.S.

"People all over the world are about to fall in love with Windows Phones," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at the Windows Phone 8 launch event in San Francisco on Monday.

Microsoft said it will also catch up in offering third-party apps. There are 120,000 applications available for Windows Phone, but some apps that are popular on other systems are notably missing from Windows Phone because it can be hard to get developers interested in writing programs for a small number of smartphones.

Microsoft is patching some of those holes soon: Microsoft vice president Joe Belfiore said Internet radio service Pandora is coming to Windows Phone 8, along with games such as "Where's My Water?" Soon, he said, 46 of the 50 most popular smartphone apps will be available.

The company is also releasing an app for Skype, the Internet calling service it owns. The Skype app available for Windows Phone 7 was an unfinished, or "beta" version. The new Skype app will run in the background, listening for incoming calls without placing any drain on the battery, Belfiore said.

Microsoft scored a big endorsement from Verizon Wireless, the largest cellphone carrier in the U.S. It will carry three Windows Phones this holiday season, including its first Nokia phone in many years. No. 2 AT&T Inc. and No. 4 T-Mobile USA will also carry Windows Phones from Nokia and HTC, leaving only No. 3 Sprint Nextel Corp. out.

Verizon executives have said that they want to see a viable "third ecosystem" alongside Apple's iPhone and Google's Android. Having more potential partners to work with provides the carriers with more leverage against each one and would make them less dependent on the whims of Apple and Google.

Microsoft released Windows 8 for desktops, laptops and tablets last week. That event was devoid of surprises, as Microsoft needed to work with hundreds of partners such as computer makers ahead of time. With smartphone software, the number of partners is much smaller, so Microsoft was able to save some details for Monday's launch event.

For example, Belfiore revealed that Windows Phone 8 will come with a "Kid's Corner" feature. If enabled, kids will be able to start up the phone from the lock screen, gaining access to apps and games that the phone's owner has designated as safe for them. Belfiore brought his three children on stage to demonstrate the feature. Actress Jessica Alba lent star power to the event, endorsing Kid's Corner as a "busy mom."

Owners will also be able link apps to their lock screen, giving them at-a-glance information such as sports scores.

Windows 8 for computers has borrowed its look from Windows Phone 7, presenting applications not as icons but as "Live Tiles," which can be animated with data from the application. For instance, the "Pictures" tile shows a slideshow.

The live tiles and the distinctive user interface remain Microsoft's biggest selling points for Windows Phone. In terms of third-party applications and the features of the phones, it's mostly playing catch-up to the iPhone and Android.

Microsoft will be emphasizing the consistent look across devices in a massive advertising campaign that will talk not just about its new software, but its venture in hardware manufacturing. On Friday, Microsoft released its first tablet computer, the Surface.

"Between Windows 8, Microsoft Surface or Windows Phone 8, you won't be able to turn on the TV or open a magazine without seeing a Microsoft Windows ad," Ballmer said.

Investors Who Own Japanese Stocks are About to Get a Nasty ...

Big Trouble For a Wide Range of Players

I expect Japanese airlines and Chinese airlines to hit turbulence, too.

Since the widespread violence in China this fall, legions of tourists and business travelers alike continue to cancel trips. While Japanese travel agencies report a drop in bookings to China, Chinese agencies are getting out of the game altogether and it's not just the bit players, either.

Xinhua reports that China International Travel Service Limited, China Comfort Travel and China CYTS Tours Holding Co., Ltd., have stopped selling travel to Japan entirely.

Reports here suggest that Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. cancelled upwards of 20,000 seats on routes into China in late September and early October. It is not clear if -- or when-- they will be added back into flight operations.

At the same time, Chinese airlines, including Air China, China Southern and China Hainan Airlines, have also cancelled flights and cut seats to Japan while also postponing valuable new routes to both Sendai and Okinawa.

Anecdotally, my friends tell me that many formerly full flights between the two countries are half full at best.

Japanese home appliance makers are not immune, either.

Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi and Sanyo are all likely to experience an earnings impact in the months ahead.

Executives I spoke with this weekend, who wish to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to speak on behalf of their companies, suggest that monthly sales in Chinese retail outlets could be off 45%-70% by the time the damage is "done."

I pressed for clarification as to when that might be and didn't get any officially. But their cold silence spoke volumes about what they expect through year end.

For Every Loser, There is a Winner

So what do you do about this? That depends on four things.

First, the situation is unlikely to go away any time soon. In fact, I believe it's going to play out well into the fourth quarter. Any Japanese company doing business with China is at risk.

Many are names you know, but if you have invested in Japanese ETFs like many investors have, there are a lot you don't know, too. This is particularly true if you factor in the extensive supplier network of second- and third-tier Japanese companies behind such well-known names as Mitsubishi, Honda and Toyota.

Second, China plays the nationalist card at its discretion and tacitly fans the flames whenever it is convenient. Its citizens, many of whom have yet to grasp the subtleties of international politics because their view of the outside world is extremely limited, react predictably when they perceive they have been wronged. So the situation and its impact on earnings is unpredictable at best.

Third, there is the very real and growing possibility that China will use military force to take the Daioyu Islands back. Since 1949, China has been involved in 23 territorial disputes and has used force in six of them - all of which resemble the Senkaku/Daioyu dispute, according to M. Taylor Fravel, an associate professor of political science at MIT and the author of Strong Borders, Secure Nation: Cooperation and Conflict in China's Territorial Dispute (Princeton, 2008).

I agree. Beijing is under pressure to produce favorable results at a time when its leadership faces a complicated transition, slowing economic prowess, unprecedented fallout from the Bo Xilai situation and other prominent scandals that have rocked the very top of the Communist Party -- including recent revelations that Premier Wen Jiabao appears to have amassed a $2 billion fortune illicitly, using his position to gain wealth and power.

Fourth, I am hard pressed to imagine how Japanese companies can come out on anything other than the losing end of the stick no matter how the Senkaku/Daioyu Island situation plays out.

And with more than 20 years of doing business in this part of the world, that's not an easy conclusion for me to reach.

Japan has built its entire economy on exports for decades and the conscious shift to embrace China in the late 1990s will haunt Japanese corporations for a long time to come if Japanese and Chinese leaders cannot come to some sort of agreement.

If there is a bright spot it is this: Capitalism works because there are ebbs and flows in capital markets that are caused, many times, by factors well beyond rational expectations.

That means there for every loser, there is a winner.

I expect German and Korean car makers to immediately fill any gaps left by pressured Japanese automakers. Both VW and Hyundai come to mind, for example. GM and Ford will both make competitive moves as well if they're smart.

In like fashion, other non-Japanese, non-Chinese air carriers will move to service demand if it resumes. This will allow both nations to draw closer together without either losing face by directly "serving" the other.

Home appliance makers are more problematic in that both industries are effectively commoditized at this point. There is very little in the way of technology or other competitive advantage that can't be taken up by local Chinese companies.

Perhaps that's an opening for American manufacturers if the upcoming anti-Chinese presidential election rhetoric doesn't effectively tank them, too.

Joss Whedon: Mitt Romney Right for 'Zombie Apocalypse'

The man behind "The Avengers," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly" released a satirical video endorsing Mitt Romney this Halloween weekend, saying the Republican candidate has some unique qualifications.

Romney has "the vision and determination to cut through business as usual politics and finally put this country back on the path to a zombie apocalypse," writer and director Joss Whedon says in the joke video .

Users watched the parody more than 800,000 times during its first 24 hours on the Internet.

Though clearly joking, Whedon plays on themes used in more serious ads. Romney has promised to create 12 million jobs to help lift Americans out of poverty, but Whedon warns that a Romney administration would favor the wealthy, leading to economic and societal deterioration.

"It's his commitment to ungoverned corporate privilege that will nosedive this economy into true insolvency and chaos, the kind of chaos you can't buy back," Whedon says. "Money is only so much paper to the undead."

Whedon also warns against a Romney agenda on social issues: "Romney is ready to make the deep rollbacks in health care, education, social services, reproductive rights that will guarantee poverty, unemployment, overpopulation, disease, rioting: all crucial elements in creating a nightmare zombie wasteland."

The video mimics actual campaign ads, showing Whedon in his home and speaking directly to the camera while seeming to go about his normal routine - which turns out to be stocking up for the pending apocalypse.

It's not the first video to warn of a bleak future, depending on who wins.

Conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza grossed $1.2 million with his documentary " Obama 2016 " in August. D'Souza told ABC News that month that the film was a look at "just how different" Obama's upbringing makes him.

The film depicts how a second term for President Obama would affect the nation, arguing that Obama harbors resentment for whites and Christians that will lead the country to disaster.

Last week, humorist John Hodgman tweeted a link to an unclaimed video that imitates a History Channel special from 2016, reflecting on a Romney administration.

"The Romney Presidency: A (Plausible) Look Back: http://youtu.be/y9cZ1FklzAw via @ youtube ," Hodgman said in the tweet. The video predicts a new economic collapse and a war with Iran.

With fewer than 120,000 views, that video does not have the popularity of Whedon's or D'Souza's. It also does not have zombies.
