Portuguese president rejects call for snap elections

AFP - Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva said Sunday he backed the country's centre-right coalition government and rejected calls for snap elections to resolve a political crisis shaking the bailed-out nation.

"I think in the current context of national emergency, calling elections is not a solution for the problems Portugal is facing," said Cavaco Silva.

"I think the best solution is to keep the current government in power."

His remarks came after crisis talks between Portugal's three main parties failed Friday to reach a pact on pursuing radical reforms to avoid a second international bailout, as Cavaco Silva had called for.

The president urged the two parties in the ruling coalition -- Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho's centre-right PSD and the conservative CDS-PP -- to work together to see through the reforms agreed under Portugal's 2011 bailout deal and enable the country to return to the international financial markets.

"It is important to show our European partners that Portugal is a governable country," Cavaco Silva said.

"The government has an undeniable majority."

The coalition between the two ruling parties gives the government a comfortable majority in parliament, but the alliance is at risk after the resignation early this month of finance minister Vitor Gaspar, the architect of the budget cuts, and foreign minister Paulo Portas, the CDS-PP leader and an increasingly sharp critic of austerity.

Their resignations plunged Portugal's politics into turmoil, casting doubt on the fate of the reforms agreed under the country's 78-billion-euro rescue from the European Union and International Monetary Fund.

Bickering in the coalition and between the government and the main opposition Socialists, the third party at the failed crisis talks, has raised fears the government's bid to overhaul its finances will derail and force the country to seek a second bailout.

After the two key ministers' resignations, worries that Portugal would veer into a new crisis shook world markets fearful of a new wave of instability in the eurozone's debt-laden periphery.

Portugal's austerity measures are widely blamed for exacerbating a three-year recession, and the resulting hardship has sparked growing street protests.

The country forecasts a 2.3-percent economic contraction this year, and has record unemployment of more than 18 percent.

Portugal's "troika" of international creditors -- the IMF, European Commission and European Central Bank -- have postponed their next review of Portugal's reform programme from mid-July to late August because of the ongoing political standoff.

One week after George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of teenager Trayvon Martin, people have started to gather for nationwide rallies to press for federal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch leader.

Beyonce and Jay Z joined the Florida teenager's mother as she spoke to crowds in Manhattan alongside the Reverend Al Sharpton.

The case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense laws, guns, and race relations.?

The Rev Al Sharpton's National Action Network organized Justice for Trayvon rallies and vigils outside federal buildings from noon in at least 101 cities, from New York and Los Angeles to Wichita in Kansas and Birmingham, Alabama.

On Saturday morning he told supporters in Manhattan he wanted a rollback of stand-your-ground self-defense laws.

'We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again,' he said.

'We have the strength to wipe our tears away. Last Saturday we cried. This Saturday we march.'

Trayvon's mother, Sybrina Fulton, also spoke at the New York rally, telling the crowd: 'Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours.'

She added: 'Of course we are hurting. Of course we are shocked and disappointed, but that just means we have to roll up our sleeves and continue to fight.'

Ms Fulton, her son Jahvaris, and the Rev Al Sharpton joined the rally as it marched to One Police Plaza at noon, where they were joined by Jay Z and his wife Beyonce, according to the New York Post.

Although they did not speak at the rally, the Rev Al Sharpton told the crowd: 'Jay Z told me, "I'm a father. Beyonce is a mother". We all feel the pain and apprehension - the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn't protect anybody.'

He added: 'We do not come from hate, we come from love of children,' according to the Huffington Post.

Beyonce had shown her support for the case last week, asking for a moment of silence at a concert after the not guilty verdict was recorded.

While Trayvon's mother was in New York, the dead teenager's father took part in a Miami rally on Saturday morning, according to?NBC News.

Tracy Martin told supporters outside Miami's federal courthouse: 'I vowed to Trayvon, when he was lying in his casket, that I would use every ounce of energy in my body to seek justice for him.'

He added: 'I will fight for Trayvon until the day I die. Not only will I fight for Trayvon, I will fight for your child as well.'

The Rev Sharpton and other supporters want the Justice Department to pursue federal civil rights charges against Mr Zimmerman.

He told the rally on Saturday: 'They will not say that was the young man killed in Sanford. They will say that was the young man who helped change the laws in the United States of America.'

Former Governor Eliot Spitzer, who attended the New York rally, said: 'Regardless of how you view the legality of the verdict in isolation, justice here was denied. An innocent young man was shot and killed and that is a tragedy.'

Attorney General Eric Holder announced this week that the department would investigate whether the Hispanic neighborhood watch man could be charged under those federal civil rights laws, which would require evidence that he harbored racial animosity against Trayvon.

Most legal experts said it would be a difficult charge to bring.

Mr Holder added that the shooting demonstrated the need to re-examine stand-your-ground laws nationwide.

More evacuations in Southern California wildfire

IDYLLWILD, California ? Residents of another 700 homes were advised to retreat to safety on Friday as crews fighting a wildfire in the mountains above Palm Springs grew increasingly concerned about the possibility of unstable weather and erratic winds.

The voluntary departures by people in Pine Cove, on the fire?s western flank, came in addition to mandatory evacuations involving 6,000 others who spent a third day away from home as the fire spread in three directions.

The blaze in the San Jacinto Mountains has expanded to roughly 42 square miles and was 15 percent contained, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Kate Kramer said.

Some communities on the eastern edge of the fire were reopened to residents, but about 5,600 homes remained under potential threat.

The fire was only about two miles from Idyllwild on its western flank and the same from Palm Springs, below on the desert floor. However, it was burning relatively slowly with the most active area south of town.

An enormous plume of smoke could be seen from Palm Springs.

A storm front headed toward the region could provide some relief with cooler weather and a chance of rain, fire spokesman Capt. Mike Lindbery said.

But it could also make the situation much more volatile because of an increased chance of thunderstorms and lightning strikes, along with increased winds.

Combined with hot air on the ground, the unstable air could create a strong updraft that draws smoke high into the atmosphere.

If the smoke column rises too high, moisture at the top could freeze and the weight of the ice could cause the column to collapse, creating a powerful downdraft in all directions, Lindbery said.

?We?re very concerned because this is the condition in the past that has definitely caused big firestorms and the death of citizens and firefighters,? he said.

?It makes it so there are not a lot of places that are safe.?

Popular campgrounds, hiking trails and a 30-mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from the Mexican border to Canada, remained closed. A small stretch of a local highway was also closed.

Some 3,300 firefighters, aided by nearly 30 aircraft, battled the fire, which stretched from 4,000 feet to 9,000 feet along the mountains. As a result, crews could be working in temperatures ranging from a comfortable 75 to a scorching 110 degrees.

The arriving storm front could bring a 20 percent chance of rain and 15-24 mph winds with gusts to 40 mph that could push the flames in erratic ways.

The fire, which began Monday, has burned six homes and mobile homes, one cabin, and more than a dozen other buildings. One home also was damaged.

Idyllwild resident Steve Hamlet had been watching a growing smoke cloud since Monday and evacuated his home with his 12-year-old grandson as flames crept closer.

On Friday, he worried whether he had packed the right things ? and worried about his wife, who had stayed behind.

?Do I take pictures? Do I take bills? Do I take legal documents? Or do I just take my grandson and I?? Hamlet said at a local evacuation shelter.

He and his grandson tried to check on his wife Thursday but were turned away at a road block after driving 25 miles up the mountain, he said.

?She knows enough when it?s time to leave,? he said.

Like Hamlet, more than 100 evacuees, including campers rousted from spots in the danger zone, spent the night at shelters located at area schools.

?They?re stressed ... and they?re anxious to hear news of their homes,? said Red Cross spokeswoman Amy Laurel Hegy.

Authorities said the fire was human-caused, but they wouldn?t say whether it was accidental or intentional. There have been no reports of injuries. The fire has cost $8.6 million to fight so far.

The fire was about 12 miles from the site of the 2006 Esperanza wildfire that killed five U.S. Forest Service firefighters and destroyed 34 homes and blackened an area that hadn?t burned in many years.

Nikolas
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Nox. It was the city beyond the veil, where the sun never shone and night was eternal. Situated parallel to the mortal realm, Nox was well hidden by a barrier only crossable by those touched by the darkness. While more than one species could cross worlds, it is Vampirekind that ruled with an iron fist. Politics were always a ruthless game, but much more cutthroat when eternity wasn?t far off from the truth and debts are literally paid in blood. It is a modern world run like a feudal system of old, built on slavery and run by royal lines. Nox, it was no place for free humans.

But what if a human found its way into the land of night?

The door closed, exiting the last appointment of the day. A tall figure was all that remained in the sterile room, painted from ceiling to floor in white. A large chair, imposing, was made of stainless steel and sat at the front of the room. A dozen of smaller chairs lined a row on either side of a carpet that stopped short of the dais that the large chair sat on. The setup was awfully familiar of a throne room, with the sole figure sitting on the throne.

Nikolas visibly relaxed as the door shut. Lengthy fingers covered his face, pressing a middle finger to his forehead and his thumb to his temple as if to relieve pressure. The moment was short lived. A knock on the door echoed through the empty hall. His hand dropped and posture straightened to the tall six-foot-five.

?Come in.? His voice, dark like warm chocolate and tinged with an accent not quite placed rang out.

The door cracked and in entered another man clad in black, his bulging muscles visible beneath the skintight black shirt and slacks. A curled cord stretched from an earpiece and down the back of his shirt. The security detailed walked the long steps to the end of the carpet and abruptly stopped to bow, one knee down and an arm across his chest like a Roman soldier before his Caesar.

?Speak, Kern.? Nikolas said, eyes bearing down on the man.

?My lord,? Spoke the now named man, ?A human has breached the veil. It is wandering the perimeter.?

Eyes narrowed, ?How??

?We haven?t yet received any further details.? Kern replied.

?Perhaps we should extend some courtesy and have them escorted in.? Nikolas said.

?Yes My Lord.? Kern replied, taking a step back and up, exiting towards the door without so much as a glance at the man on the throne.

?Oh, and Kern-? Nikolas called after the man before he slipped through the door. ?Please send in Alice, I may be in need of her services this afternoon.?

Nikolas was certain he saw a ripple of fear and disgust run through Kern as the door shut behind him. Such a reaction caused a wicked grin to tug at the corners of his lips. His eyes darkened.

Helpful Tips For Tackling Your Home Improvement Projects ...

Home improvement is the best method to increase the value of your home. There are many things to keep in mind when making changes to your home. This article will provide a number of tips to help you make the best home improvement choices for you and your family.

A kitchen remodel is less expensive if you refinsh existing cabinets. You can give them a completely new look by painting the bases and changing the doors. This is an inexpensive task that can be done in a weekend, and it will give your home a fresh, new feel.

You can renew the appearance of your walls by spackling small holes and painting. You can find spackle at any home improvement shop. Small amounts should suffice, should the holes not be too large. A bobby pin can be used to fill small holes, by applying spackle with the tip. Once it dries, use something rigid to smooth it over the hole. Then paint. This will allow you to get rid of holes in your walls quickly.

If you happen to notice leaking water underneath the sink or tap, then never try fixing the leak on your own. You can collect the water while you are waiting.

Even if certain home improvement supplies look like a great deal, you should do some comparison shopping before you buy them. Flooring is one area where it?s all too easy to spend more than you need to; comparison shopping will help you zero in on the best deals. Between the discount outlets you can find and the bargain-hunting resources available to you, you may be able to save significant amounts of money.

It is important that any home improvement task you start takes into account your budget, skill level and functionality before you begin. As one of your most valuable assets, your home can be a comfortable abode for you, your family and future generations if you perform the necessary upkeep and improvements.

Seems this year's focus is on Ultimate Team. I hope they make it a bit better to navigate, last year's was very confusing, me being used to a streamlined Fifa UT.
Also only one career to go through, shaving hundreds of hours of 13's grind.

I was addicted to MUT on Madden 12 and 13, so I'm glad they added more achievements to the mode. The achievements in this game are nothing compared to Madden 2013. 2013's connected careers were a huge grind.

@6: They have not announced any info on how games released on both systems will work achievement-wise. We assume there will be two separate lists with the Xbox One version being a fancy cloud updatable one and the Xbox 360 version being a normal static version with DLC updates if applicable.

Mayor wants new Coyotes-related New Year's

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- There's the ball drop in Time's Square and the Boot Drop in Prescott, Ariz.

Now, Glendale's Mayor, Jerry Weiers, wants his city to start its own New Year's Eve tradition centered around hockey: Weiers is proposing that the city drop a giant hockey puck in Westgate City Center at midnight on New Year's Eve.

Weiers was in the minority earlier this month when the Glendale City Council voted 4-3 to approve an arena lease deal for Jobing.com Arena. He believed the city couldn't afford the 15-year, $225 million agreement that keeps the Phoenix Coyotes playing in Glendale.

Once the vote was taken, Weiers immediately made a pledge to the team.

"I'm going to go out of my way and work as hard as I can to make the Coyotes successful," he said. "If the Coyotes are successful, my city is successful."

Now he's pushing to have the Coyotes' New Year's home game turned into a celebration.

"There's a game that night," said Weiers. "It starts at 7 p.m. I expect to have a full house at the arena. The game will end about 10 or 10:30. If I can keep those folks there for another hour-and-a-half or two hours, have them spend their money at Westgate, and have some fun with it, why not?"

Weiers explained what he has in mind for midnight.

"Why not do a 10-foot diameter great big hockey puck with two 40-foot high hockey sticks crossed. The puck drops, and when it hits the bottom, it lights up and says 2014."

He said this is just a theory so far. Weiers didn't say how much it would cost, but said the city would sell sponsorships for the puck drop.

Weiers believes the team is on board with the plan.

"I called Anthony LeBlanc of the Coyotes, and he loved the idea," he said.

LeBlanc is one of the partners in Renaissance Sports and Entertainment, which is taking over ownership of the team.

The National Hockey League has not yet announced the 2013-2014 schedule. A spokesman for the Coyotes said that it appears that the team will have a home game on New Year's Eve, but it is not yet known who the opponent will be.

Weiers is hoping to make the New Year's Eve puck drop an annual tradition in Glendale.
