If you've been missing out on the graphics card wars of late, then here's a quick rundown. AMD launched its high-end $549 Radeon HD 7970 at the end of last year, and it reigned comfortably for a few months until NVIDIA came out with the masterful GeForce GTX 680. That would have been the end of the matter, at least for this product cycle, except for one crucial factor: time. Having reached the market so much earlier, AMD has now had six months to not only tweak its drivers but also its 28nm silicon. That process has already culminated in 1GHz cards at the low- and mid-ranges, and today it leads to the (slightly predictable) announcement of a Radeon HD 7970 'GHz Edition' -- priced at $499 and expected to be available from a range of board makers from next week. Elephant seals help uncover slower-than-expected Antarctic melting

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Don't let the hobbling, wobbling, and blubber fool you into thinking elephant seals are merely sluggish sun bathers. In fact, scientists are benefiting from these seals' surprisingly lengthy migrations to determine critical information about Antarctic melting and future sea level rise.

A team of scientists have drilled holes through an Antarctic ice shelf, the Fimbul Ice Shelf, to gather the first direct measurements regarding melting of the shelf's underside. A group of elephant seals, outfitted with sensors that measure salinity, temperature, and depth sensors added fundamental information to the scientists' data set, which led the researchers to conclude that parts of eastern Antarctica are melting at significantly lower rates than current models predict.

"It has been unclear, until now, how much warm deep water rises below the Fimbul Ice shelf, and previous ocean models, focusing on the circulation below the Fimbul Ice Shelf, have predicted temperatures and melt rates that are too high, suggesting a significant mass loss in this region that is actually not taking place as fast as previously thought," said lead author of the study and PhD student at the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), Tore Hattermann.

The Fimbul Ice Shelf -- located along eastern Antarctica in the Weddell Sea -- is the sixth largest of the forty-three ice shelves that dapple Antarctica's perimeter. Both its size and proximity to the Eastern Antarctic Ice Sheet -- the largest ice sheet on Earth, which if it melted, could lead to extreme changes in sea level -- have made the Fimbul Ice Shelf an attractive object of study.

The team is the first to provide direct, observational evidence that the Fimbul Ice Shelf is melting from underneath by three, equally important processes. Their results confirm a 20-year-old theory about how ice shelves melt that, until now, was too complex to be further investigated with models that had no direct observations for comparison. These processes likely apply to other areas of Antarctica, primarily the eastern half because of its similar water and wind circulation patterns, Hattermann said. The scientists report their findings on June 22 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union.

Using nearly 12 tons of equipment, the scientists drilled three holes of an average depth of 230 meters (820 feet) that were dispersed approximately 50-100 kilometers (31-62 miles) apart along the shelf, which spans an area roughly twice the size of New Jersey. The location of each hole was strategically chosen so that the various pathways by which water moves beneath the ice shelf could be observed.

What the team observed was that during the summer, relatively warm surface waters are pushed beneath the ice shelves by strong wind-driven currents. While this happens, another process transports warm water deeper in the ocean towards the coast and below the ice.

Combining with those effects is a process inherent to the cold ocean waters: The freezing point of water depends on its depth. The deeper the water, the lower its freezing point. Water of a constant temperature will freeze on the surface but remain liquid (or melt, if it was already frozen) at a given depth, like at the bottom of an ice shelf. Therefore, there is a slight but continuous melting of the Fimbul Ice Shelf's undersides due to this physical phenomenon.

To understand the extent to which these three processes interact and melt the ice shelf, scientists needed a detailed record of annual water cycles and circulation around eastern Antarctica. Enter nine male elephant seals that swam 1,600 kilometers (about 1,000 miles) from Bouvet Island (written as Bouvet?ya in Norwegian), in the middle of the Southern Ocean, to the outskirts of the Fimbul Ice Shelf.

Hattermann and his team borrowed the "seal data" from biologists of the Norwegian Polar Institute, who originally gathered the data during their Marine Mammal Exploration of the Oceans Pole to Pole (MEOP) research project, part of the International Polar Year program.

"Nobody was expecting that the MEOP seals from Bouvet?ya would swim straight to the Antarctic and stay along the Fimbul Ice Shelf for the entire winter," Hattermann said. "But, this behavior certainly provided an impressive and unique data set."

For nine consecutive months, the sensors atop the seals' heads read the temperature and salinity of the waters along the outskirts of the Fimbul Ice Shelf and recorded their changes over time. To collect the same amount of continuous data from a ship would not only incur far greater cost but would be almost impossible during the winter months due to dangerous ice buildup.

From the "seal data," the scientists accumulated enough knowledge concerning the area's water circulation and how it changes over the seasons to construct the most complete picture of what and how the Fimbul Ice Shelf is melting from the bottom up.

It turns out that past studies, which were based on computer models without any direct data for comparison or guidance, overestimate the water temperatures and extent of melting beneath the Fimbul Ice Shelf. This has led to the misconception, Hattermann said, that the ice shelf is losing mass at a faster rate than it is gaining mass, leading to an overall loss of mass. The model results were in contrast to the available data from satellite observations, which are supported by the new measurements.

The team's results show that water temperatures are far lower than computer models predicted, which means that the Fimbul Ice Shelf is melting at a slower rate. Perhaps indicating that the shelf is neither losing nor gaining mass at the moment because ice buildup from snowfall has kept up with the rate of mass loss, Hattermann said.

"Our data shows what needs to be included in the next generation models, in order to be able to do a good job in predicting future melt rates," Hattermann said.

Because wind patterns and water cycles are similar for large parts of eastern Antarctica, Hattermann said, his team's results could help predict the next time when a section of the Fimbul Ice Shelf, or other ice shelves along the eastern coast of Antarctica, may break off. Because ice shelves are already submerged, their melting does not directly influence sea level rise. However, the rate that ice shelves are melting is still crucial to this issue, he said.

"Ice shelves act as a mechanical barrier for the grounded inland ice that continuously moves from higher elevation towards the coast," Hattermann said. "Once an ice shelf is removed, this ice flow may speed up, which then increases the loss of grounded ice, causing the sea level rise."

More correctly, sexual reproduction as a biological phenomenon has been around for over a billion years. Birds, bees, flowers and trees all reproduce sexually. For an organism to reproduce sexually it needs to produce gametes, or sex cells, and this occurs during a specialised form of cell division known as meiosis.

During meiosis, two cycles of cell division occur to produce gametes with only half of the number of chromosomes of the parent that produced them. Just before the first division, the maternal and paternal pairs of chromosomes line up and cross over, like couples swapping places in a formation dance. This recombination leads to gametes with a unique combination of genetic material from both parents and is responsible for genetic diversity within populations. It?s why two sisters (or two brothers) from the same parents don?t look the same.

Like in all formation dances with particular steps, the process of crossing over is tightly controlled. For researchers keen to unlock genetic diversity in agricultural crops, understanding the genetic control of crossing over is of particular interest. For Dr Wayne Crismani, this interest in the genes controlling recombination has led him from a PhD in his home town at the University of Adelaide, to a three-year stint in the meiosis lab of INRA in Versailles, France.

When asked where his interest came from, Wayne explained ?It was by chance at the beginning. A friend introduced me to my PhD supervisor, Dr Jason Able and I was fascinated by the complicated yet very impressive genetics of bread wheat and other crops. Later I made a very deliberate decision to come to France for my post-doc. I was lucky enough to visit many excellent overseas laboratories during my PhD including the opportunity to spend four months here on a Marie Curie fellowship from the EU. I developed a taste for genetics and microscopy and I knew this was the place to be and that I wanted to come back.?

And now, Dr Crismani, his fellow researchers at INRA and their Spanish and American colleagues have made an exciting new discovery, recently published in Science (DOI: 10.1126/science.1220381). ?Many genes that promote the formation of meiotic crossovers in plants have been discovered. But we have found a gene that actually limits the number of crossovers that occur? said Wayne.

Dr Crismani and his colleagues worked with a mutant of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress) with very low numbers of crossovers and, as a consequence, poor fertility. By looking for new mutations that had restored fertility due to increased crossovers, the researchers were able to work backwards and identify the genes responsible.

They discovered that a single mutation in a gene known as FANCM led to a tripling in the numbers of crossovers compared to what usually occurs in Arabidopsis, without any negative effects on the fertility or health of the plant. Wayne explained ?This was really exciting for us. Until now, FANCM was known to have a role in DNA repair and the human version of the protein has an essential role in genome stability. But we are the first to show that it limits meiotic crossing over in any species.?

Because combining traits in a breeding program is limited by meiotic crossovers, this discovery is likely to be welcomed by crop breeders world-wide. However, it will still take some time before this discovery may be applied to species of agricultural interest. ?The gene exists in essentially all species. However the important question for plant breeders is does a loss of function of the gene have the same effect in other species, notably in the world?s major crop species? If so it could deliver huge benefits by reducing the amount of time required to produce a new variety? said Wayne.

Although Wayne and his fellow researchers hope that this work will ultimately help to accelerate the production of new plant varieties needed to feed a growing population, their findings also question the role of genetic recombination in evolutionary terms. ?We were able to markedly increase the frequency of crossovers without negatively affecting the fertility, but we still don?t really know why in nature genetic recombination is typically quite limited? said Wayne, adding ?The findings have opened up many avenues of future research. I have lot of projects in mind, particularly since my boss Rapha?l Mercier is someone who just has idea after idea. I think it is rubbing off on me.?

Record heat forecast for Northeast

As TODAY's Al Roker reports, sizzling temperatures will heat up much of the East Coast, just in time for the official start of summer.

Temperatures across the Northeast were expected to approach triple digits Wednesday, just as summer officially begins.

The National Weather Service has forecast potentially record-breaking hot temperatures, with readings expected to be in the mid- to high-90s Wednesday and Thursday in cities including Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Humidity could make it feel even hotter.


Locations from Philadelphia to Baltimore and Washington, D.C., could top out in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees, while interior cities such as Pittsburgh, Pa., Albany, N.Y., and Burlington, Vt., will also surge into the 90s, The Weather Channel reported.

Sweltering heat will also persist farther to the west in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, including Chicago, Ill., Detroit, Mich., Cleveland, Ohio, and Louisville, Ky.

Health officials warned residents to drink water, stay out of the sun and in air conditioning, and to check on elderly neighbors and pets, according to The Associated Press. For those without air conditioning, "cooling centers" have been set up in public buildings in dozens of cities.

New York City's 1.1 million public school students are still in session for another week, and just 64 percent of classrooms are air-conditioned.

Students were being advised to wear light clothing and drink plenty of water, and schools have been told to limit outdoor playtime, city Education Department spokeswoman Marge Feinberg said.

In Brooklyn, street vendor James Martin said his family's sixth-floor apartment in Coney Island has no air conditioning and can get really hot. But "we open the front door and all the windows, and we get a nice breeze," he said.

Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., opened several spray parks on Tuesday to help residents cool off as hot, muggy weather settled in. Buffalo, which will only be in the mid- to high-80s on Wednesday and Thursday, doesn't normally open its 11 splash pads until July 1.

The wilting heat also will hit Boston-area residents hard. Temperatures of up to 97 degrees are forecast for Wednesday, followed by 99 on Thursday. Current record highs for these dates are 98 and 95 degrees, respectively.

Philadelphians might see the mercury soar to 95 and 99 degrees mid-week after enjoying relatively mild June temperatures.?Normally, the high for Philadelphia at this time of year is about 84 degrees ? closer to Wednesday's predicted low of 80 degrees. The city's highs in the next couple of days will approach, if not break, decades-old records of 98 degrees, set in 1931, and 99, set in 1923.

The city began a staggered schedule of opening its swimming pools on Monday, a couple of days after schools let out for the year. Nearly two dozen of the city's 70 pools will be open by Wednesday, with another seven opening Thursday.

"We're very lucky that the pools opened yesterday," said James Garrow, a spokesman for the Philadelphia health department.

The city will also activate its heat hotline at noon Wednesday and will work with senior centers, libraries and recreation centers to make sure air conditioners are running.

Officials will be setting up 114 cooling centers at facilities across the city, said Garrow.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, the state's largest transit agency,?planned to have extra maintenance workers to help deal with heat-related switch failures, problems with track expansion and any overhead wire issues on suburban train lines.

In Rhode Island, all regular public buses and trolleys will be free on Wednesday due to anticipated air quality issues.

Moderate relief from the high mercury should come this weekend.
