Johnson scores big KO, Lamas and Uyenoyama win at UFC on Fox

Johnson scores big KO, Lamas and Uyenoyama win at UFC on Fox

In the preliminary fights at UFC on Fox in Anaheim, Ricardo Lamas scored an emotional win, DaMarques Johnson notched a quick KO and Darren Uyenoyama dominated his way to a decision.

Johnson gets KO of the Night nominee

Damarques Johnson made quick work of fellow "Ultimate Fighter" alumnus Clay Harvison, knocking him out in the first round. Johnson landed a left hook, took a second to celebrate, then threw another punch to finish the bout at 1:34. That moves Johnson's record to 13-9, with 4-3 in the UFC, while is now 9-4. He is 1-2 in the UFC, losing his last two bouts.

"It feels great to get the win because I know that's what I'm capable of. I just wanted to go out there and show a more polished version of myself and I think I did that tonight. I was prepared to let the fight go wherever he wanted to take it. I planned on giving him a false sense of security and self confidence so that I could capitalize on his mistakes if he over-committed," Johnson said.

Lamas wins with an arm triangle

Though Cub Swanson was touted as the better grappler, Ricard Lamas took their bout with an arm triangle. Lamas started out the first round with a takedown, but left his neck open for a guillotine, one of Swanson's favorite moves. Lamas tried to slam Swanson, and then stood up to finally shake him off. Swanson was aggressive in stand-up, landing big kicks and strikes.

In the third, Lamas got a takedown that led to ground and pound, then switched to a perfectly executed arm triangle. Swanson appeared to be comfortable at first, but Swanson couldn't defend. He was forced to tap at 2:16 of the second round.

Afterwards, Lamas broke down in tears and dedicated the fight to his grandmother, who passed away a week ago. Lamas is 11-2 after the win, and Swanson, who had a long layoff due to a stretch of injuries, is now 15-5.

Johnson scores big KO, Lamas and Uyenoyama win at UFC on Fox

Uyenoyama takes out "The Kid"

Darren Uyenoyama's superior grappling and conditioning led to decision win. The judges scored it 30-27, 30-26, 30-27.

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto started strong with a takedown, but Uyenoyama defended well and was able to get back up. Uyenoyama knocked Yamamoto down and then controlled him on the ground. He slapped on a rear naked choke and sunk it deep, but it was late in the round. Yamamoto looked like he was going to tap, but the horn sounded to end the round. Yamamoto stood up quickly, clarifying that he did not tap.

In the second round, Yamamoto caught Uyenoyama with a clean strike and cut his face.? Uyenoyama survived and got the edge in grappling. He mounted Yamamoto's back, using a body triangle to control the fight.

The third round featured more excellent grappling from Uyenoyama. He controlled Yamamoto for most of the round on the ground. When they were on their feet, he showed excellent takedown defense.

"I was walking to the Octagon and I still couldn't believe I was about to compete in the UFC. I didn't have an easy road to get here and I had the honor of fighting a legend and a personal hero of mine. I hope that the fight wasn't boring because I tried to make it exciting for the fans. I had trouble with a cut during training and 'Kid' was able to open it up again in there. He hit me with some hard shots and I'm happy I was able to take them because I think that he is one of the hardest punchers in the division," Uyenoyoma said after the bout.

Kid-friendly gaming comes to Android with Sandbox

So I get this email the other day from a guy named Cody Powell. He says, ?I know you guys don?t often cover family-targeted stuff, but we?re seeing a very enthusiastic response from our users.? He?s right in his assertion, but heck, I?m a dad and family-targeted stuff sometimes interests me.

What Powell?s company, the Austin-based Famigo, is offering is a way to let your kids play with your Android phone while keeping them safe from social networks, in-app ads and games that you?d rather they didn?t see. For me, this is definitely interesting, even if I do use my iPhone more regularly than I use an Android device.

Famigo?s Sandbox is what the name implies ? a sandbox. In computing terms, if you?re not familiar, sandboxing is a way of sectioning off an application from its surrounding environment. Usually it?s used to make sure that one thing can?t affect another, but in this case it?s a matter of setting aside a protected app environment in your phone that keeps your kids from doing things you?d rather that they wouldn?t.

Phone Famigo Sandbox creates a kid safe gaming environment on your Android phoneThere are only 2 modes to Sandbox ? Manage and Play. Manage allows the parent to change the settings, blocking things like in-app purchases and social gaming features. It also lets you discover new apps, delivering Famigo-reveiewed titles that are family-friendly, and customizing recommendations based on what you?ve already installed.

As for Play mode? You can do 2 things ? customize the layout and launch apps. That?s it. And that?s exactly the point. Instead of having to worry about what you?re kids can access on your phone, they?re locked into the Sandbox, even if the phone goes to sleep and is unlocked again. The only way out? A full reboot, or an unlock from the parents.

In short, Famigo?s Sandbox does exactly what it?s meant to do, and offers great app discovery in the process. While it?s not likely that we?ll see an iOS version of Sandbox any time in the future due to Apple?s restrictions, it?s a great option for those of us who have kids, have an Android device and want to let them use it from time to time.

Best of all, it?s free. So get downloading Famigo Sandbox and let us know your thoughts.

Obama calls waterboarding 'torture' (AP)

KAPOLEI, Hawaii ? President Barack Obama says the interrogation technique known as waterboarding constitutes torturing, disputing Republican presidential candidates who say they would reinstate the practice.

Obama called waterboarding "torture" and said it was "contrary to America's traditions" during a news conference at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Republicans Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann said during a Republican debate on Saturday that they would reinstate the technique that former President George W. Bush authorized and Obama banned.

The practice simulates drowning and is viewed as torture by many.

Venezuelan cops rescue kidnapped Nats catcher

Ramos 'safe and sound' after Wednesday abduction; five suspects arrested

By IAN JAMES

updated 12:26 p.m. ET Nov. 12, 2011

VALENCIA, Venezuela - The kidnapping ordeal of Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos ended after two days when Venezuelan police commandos swooped in to rescue him in a flurry of gunfire and arrested five alleged abductors.

Ramos said he was happy and thankful to be alive, and that the final moments had been hair-raising as police and the kidnappers exchanged heavy fire in the remote mountainous area where he was being held.

"The truth is I'm still very nervous, but thanks to God everything turned out well," Ramos told Venezuelan state television, speaking by telephone after arriving at a police station in his hometown of Valencia early Saturday.

He thanked the police and National Guard commandos who rescued him, saying "the boys did a great job."

Ramos, 24, had not been seen or heard from since he was seized at gunpoint outside his home in the city of Valencia Wednesday night and whisked away in an SUV. It was the first known kidnapping of a Major League Baseball player in Venezuela, and the abduction set off an outpouring of candlelight vigils and public prayers at stadiums as well as outside Ramos' home.

With Ramos at his side at a police station in Valencia, Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said Saturday during a news conference that authorities had arrested four of the captors, all of them Venezuelan men in their 20s. A 60-year-old woman and 74-year-old man were also arrested for supplying the kidnappers with food from their home in the area, he said.

Authorities are still searching for four Colombian men who escaped during the rescue, said El Aissami.

On Friday, he didn't say whether anyone had been wounded in the gunfire.

"I don't know who those people were. I know they're Colombians by their accent," Ramos said earlier Saturday. "Three guys grabbed me there in front of my house, they took me to another SUV and from there they took me into the mountains," in central Carabobo state.

He said his abductors spoke little to him. "They simply told me to cooperate, that they were going to ask for a ton of cash for me."

"They put me in a room with a bed. I was lying there," he said. "It was hard for me to think about, if I was going to get out alive first of all ... about how my family, my mother were."

Ramos was to first undergo medical checks at the police station and then be reunited with his family, El Aissami said.

Ramos' mother Maria Campos de Ramos celebrated, exclaiming on television: "Thanks to God!"

"Thanks to my country, to my neighbors and to my family, who were supporting us," she said. Shortly afterward, she spoke with her son by phone and said jubilantly: "He's fine."

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo hailed the news.

"I am happy to announce that I have spoken directly with Wilson and he assures me he is unharmed but eager to be reunited with his family," Rizzo said in a statement. "He asked me to thank all who played a role in his rescue, and all those who kept him and his family in their thoughts and prayers. I join Wilson in thanking the many law enforcement officials in Venezuela and investigators with Major League Baseball who worked tirelessly to ensure a positive ending to what has been a frightening ordeal."

Ramos had recently returned to his homeland after his rookie year with the Nationals to play during the offseason in the Venezuelan league.

"As soon as I feel all right, I'm going to start playing," Ramos said.

"They didn't physically harm me, but psychologically I underwent very great harm," he said.

Ramos had been just outside his house's front door with relatives on Wednesday when he was abducted in his working-class neighborhood in Valencia, about 90 miles (150 kilometers) west of Caracas. Authorities tracked down the abductors after initially locating their stolen SUV abandoned in a nearby town on Thursday.

"I was always praying to God, and thanks to God he gave me the miracle of sending me these wonderful people," Ramos said. "I'm alive thanks to them."

President Hugo Chavez had authorized the "rescue operation by air" that freed Ramos, Information Minister Andres Izarra said on his Twitter account. El Aissami said Saturday that Chavez had followed the operation "minute by minute."

Security has increasingly become a concern for Venezuelan players and their families as a wave of kidnappings has hit the wealthy as well as the middle class.

The country has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America, and the vast majority of crimes go unsolved. The number of kidnappings has soared in recent years.

Major League Baseball officials said it was the first kidnapping of a major leaguer that they could recall. But relatives of several players have previously been kidnapped for ransom in Venezuela, and in two cases have been killed.

Some kidnappings in Venezuela have previously been carried out by highly organized criminal groups that demand ransom.

Bodyguards typically shadow major leaguers when they return to their homeland to play in Venezuela's baseball league.

Izarra praised the authorities' handling of the rescue, saying that the police "hit a tremendous home run."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Republican presidential contender Rick Perry laughed about his debate performance with David Letterman, gamely poking fun at himself Thursday by giving the TV audience "Top 10 Rick Perry Excuses" for being unable to remember the three federal agencies he would eliminate.

Reason No. 7 for his brain freeze Wednesday on stage with his GOP rivals: "I thought the debate was tonight."

Reason No. 6, "Hey, listen. You try concentrating with Mitt Romney smiling at you. That is one handsome dude," Perry chuckled during his segment with the comedian, according to excerpts provided in advance by the show.

At the debate, Perry could only come up with the names of two of the three agencies he had promised to get rid of if elected president.

Perry later said he would eliminate the Commerce, Education and Energy departments.

He also acknowledged that he had "stepped in it" during the debate.

Perry is trying to turn the stumble into an opportunity. He is asking supporters to pitch in a few dollars for every agency they would abolish.
