With focus on Iowa, Huntsman continues NH effort (AP)

NASHUA, N.H. ? Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman said Monday that his intense focus on New Hampshire is paying off and went after rival Mitt Romney in unusually sharp language.

But Huntsman, the former Utah governor, is still being met by some blank looks with the primary just eight days away.

Watching Huntsman enter a Nashua diner surrounded by television cameras, voter Jimmy Pacheco at first mistook the former Utah governor for New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, and not a flicker of recognition crossed his face when he heard Huntsman's name. But by the time Huntsman reached his booth, the former truck driver greeted him like an old friend, complimented him on his "pretty wife" and said afterward that he probably would vote for Huntsman.

Noting that Huntsman is skipping Iowa's Tuesday caucuses and staking his hopes on a strong showing in New Hampshire's Jan. 10 primary, Pacheco said, "He cares about us."

Two minutes earlier, Pacheco had said he was leaning toward Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, who has long been the front-runner in New Hampshire.

After stopping by several Nashua businesses and restaurants, Huntsman told reporters that New Hampshire is a place where an underdog can come from behind and beat expectations.

"It happens time and time again here in New Hampshire. It's where message matters, it's where grass-roots politics is rewarded, and this is a state that is finely tuned to finding leaders and then sending them south," he said.

While he lags far behind Romney in polls, the usually positive Huntsman went after Romney by name while speaking to voters in Dover later in the day.

"You can do what the establishment wants you to do. You've got a good candidate in Mitt Romney," Huntsman said. "If you have 47 members of Congress supporting you, as he just announced today, you think you're going to be to do what needs to be done in terms of reforming Congress? No how, no way."

He also suggested Romney couldn't reform the banking system because he's receiving too many donations from Wall Street.

"We cannot afford a status quo presidency," Huntsman said.

At another restaurant, GOP voter Matt Dobski said he was closer to backing Huntsman after meeting him but remained undecided. He said he likes Romney but doesn't like the health care law he enacted in Massachusetts, finds former House Speaker Newt Gingrich too polarizing, and thinks Texas Rep. Ron Paul is too extreme.

Huntsman, in contrast, "is probably one of the only candidates who's been consistent in all his policies and what's needed to change America," Dobski said. "That's important because, right now, everybody's waffling to say what they need to say to get votes. ... So a guy like Huntsman could really come through and steal the show, if he gets the media exposure he needs."

After having the state to himself last week, Huntsman soon will have plenty of company. Only seven days separate the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary

Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann plan to head straight to South Carolina after Iowa and then return to New Hampshire for two debates just before the primary.

Huntsman downplayed those debates, saying there have been too many already.

"I think with each passing debate, they're less and less important," he said. "People see them more as show business."

Sony Tablet S Price Falls by ?50

Liam Martin Today

Sleek, sexy and as powerful as a media mogul with a phone-tapping device, Sony's range of tablets rival the very best available today. The only sticking point was always the price, which, at a minimum of ?400, was about as competitive as a three-wheel van at Silverstone. They are getting cheaper, however, with the cost of the Sony Tablet S falling by ?50.

The UK price of the Sony Tablet S was actually cut in the run up to Christmas, although this was originally thought to be a short-term saving to boost festive sales. If the US market is anything to go by, however, this may turn out to be a permanent saving, with the price across the pond falling by $100.

There does, however, seem to be a little confusion about whether or not the price cut is part of a January sale promotion or representative of a long-term saving. If the inbox of?Beta News editor Joe Wilcox is anything to go by, the saving is permanent, despite the US store listing the tablets as sale items.

As CNET points out, the price cut points towards a worrying trend for non-Apple tablets - albeit a positive one for consumers - with more and more high-end tablet manufacturers resorting to price cuts. RIM's Blackberry PlayBook suffered the biggest drop in value in recent months, while Hewlett-Packard almost went under thanks to the poorly judged launch price of its Touchpad.

With Amazon's relatively cheap Kindle Fire yet to be released in the UK, we expect even more tablet savings in the coming months.

List: 'Baby bump' dumped, 'amazing' phrases banned

Before passing comment on someone's "baby bump," take a pregnant pause. Likewise, give up promoting "shared sacrifice." And if you're tempted to proclaim your desire to "win the future," you've lost it here in the present.

Michigan's Lake Superior State University is featuring those phrases in its annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness. The 2012 list, released Friday, was compiled by the university from nominations submitted from across the globe.

What else do the syntactical Scrooges want to cast out with the good cheer in the new year? The list also includes "occupy," "ginormous," "man cave" and "the new normal."

In all, a dozen words or phrases made the 37th end-of-the year list. The list started as a publicity ploy by the school's public relations department on New Year's Day 1976, and has since generated tens of thousands of nominations.

"Amazing" received more than 1,500 nominations, the most of any on this year's list. Disdain for the superlative was apparently universal among English speakers, garnering disparaging dispatches from across the United States and even the United Kingdom and Israel.

While it lacked a single pop-culture culprit, such as the proliferating protest movement that occupied the word "occupy" or the collective ooh-ing and aah-ing that accompanied Beyonce's "baby bump," nominations to banish "amazing" cite its overuse on reality television and by daytime talk show hosts. Social media also spurred the call to surrender the word's conversational credentials, notably through a Facebook page called "Overuse of the Word Amazing."

"The word has been overused to describe things only slightly better than mundane," Alyce-Mae Alexander of Maitland, Fla., wrote in her nomination. "I blame Martha Stewart because to her, EVERYTHING is amazing!"

University spokesman John Shibley said he and his colleagues were surprised that "amazing" hadn't already graced the archive of about 900 banished words.

"The simple ones are always the ones that get through the cracks ? until this year," he said.

Other terms circulating for years that have finally raised enough ire to earn a spot on the list include "blowback," "man cave," "the new normal" and "thank you in advance." The last one particularly annoys Mike Cloran of Cincinnati, Ohio.

"This is a condescending and challenging way to say, 'Since I already thanked you, you have to do this,'" Cloran wrote in his submission.

Lake Superior State University, located in Sault St. Marie ? the last stop before Michigan's northernmost border-crossing with Canada ? has seen its list survive despite many banished words stubbornly clinging to the language. For evidence, look no further than last year's "fail," "viral" and "a-ha moment." And then there is, well, blowback from critics who can't take a little tongue-in-cheek critique.

Shibley said some people have missed the point over the years and complained that the list is an effort to control the language. But most seem to receive it in good cheer, rather than with jeers.

"A lot of people can take this wrong. We don't mean any malice when we publish it," Shibley said. "If it makes you angry, it gets you thinking about language. If it gets you laughing, it gets you thinking about language. It's done its job ? to get you to think about how you express yourself."
