After initially being announced only for the HTC One, an Indiegogo fundraising campaign was started to bring support for the MoDaCo Switch to the Samsung Galaxy S4. The MoDaCo Switch will enable one set of user data and apps to be shared by two different versions of the Android operating system: the Samsung TouchWiz version of Jelly Bean, and the "Google Edition" version of Android Jelly Bean. This allows one phone to switch back and forth between software versions, making changes to one side (like installing apps) that are also reflected on the other.
A goal of £1,000 was set on Indiegogo to bring the Switch to the Samsung Galaxy S4, which was exceeded with over two weeks still left in the campaign. The following update was given in response to the donators' support:
Thanks to everyone who has pledged so far, you're all awesome and it's fantastic we've hit the target already. I'm not setting stretch goals per se, but all subsequent donations help get us towards the ultimate goal of making Switch available for all ROM developers to use and thereby all devices. Switch is for you - Android fans. :-)

The once-mythical Office Mobile for iPhone has been available for a while, but what about that rumored Android version? As of today, it's equally real: Microsoft has launched Office Mobile for Android. Its cloud-focused approach to editing Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents will be familiar to those who've tried the iOS release, including SkyDrive storage support. What differences exist are there primarily to accommodate Google's Holo interface guidelines -- as on iOS, there's no tablet-native interface. The pricing certainly hasn't changed. While the core app is free, you'll need an Office 365 subscription to start working.

Local NGO Hope For Women?has released a book on women?s rights in Islam in an effort to counter what it has described as a growth in ?conservative Islamic teachings or religious justifications, that use Islam as a tool to intimidate and repress women?.
The book, titled ?Women?s Rights Through an Islamic Lens?,?has been compiled by Hope For Women with support from renowned local Islamic scholar Dr Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa.
Minivan News was told during the launch that the publication attempts to challenge a perceived emergence of more religious conservative viewpoints in Maldivian society regarding the role of women and gender equality.
Issues addressed by the book include polygamy, a husband?s right to beat his wife, inheritance and the right to divorce.
Hope For Women?s co-founder, former Gender Minister Aneesa Ahmed, expressed particular concern over the growth of conservative views that she argued were limiting the role of women in society to domestic spheres and portraying them as being inferior to men.
She recalled hearing an Islamic scholar preaching on television that women become a ?property? of their husbands following marriage, and said such preaching has to be stopped.
?This kind of conservative views that belittle a person is a major obstacle to building harmonious relationships on which a strong family and society is built on,? Aneesa noted.
?Many of the problems existing in our society roots back to inferior roles women and girls have within their households,? she observed. ?I hope these publications will clarify the rights and status of women in Islam and create more awareness within our society.?
The NGO has also translated three publications from the international organisation ?Sisters of Islam? ? including ?Are Muslim men allowed to beat their wives??, ?Are women and men equal before Allah?? and ?Musawah Framework for Action?.
Musawah is described as a holistic framework created by a group of 12 Muslim activists and scholars from 11 countries on ?promoting concepts of justice and equality in Islam, and the Muslim family in particular,? according to its website.
Hope for Women said it had ?become incumbent upon all civil society actors to speak out and stand up against the widespread prejudices that encourage women to be relegated to a marginalised existence and sometimes subjected to extraordinary acts of violence.?
Speaking at the launching ceremony of the project yesterday (July 30), newly appointed Gender Minister Dr Aamaal Ali observed that ?outdated ways of thinking are being preached today as the Islamic way, and this has resulted in a backlash against women?s role in society?
?My students tell me they hear a certain sermon when they get into a taxi. They face discrimination at some gatherings from other women and outside forces are influencing their family life. Some girls also tell me their husbands are pressuring them for a second marriage,? explained Dr Amaal, who has served as a teacher and principal at the all-girls Ameeniya School in Male?.
?Sometimes when I think, I wonder if women are seen as disposable, to throw away once they become old. Because women are today often being treated as disposable beings,? she added.
The minister noted that if young women in the country informed themselves about religion with education, as well as providing themselves with empowerment and economic emancipation, it would help reduce many of the problems they faced such as domestic violence.

On Monday's PoliticsNation, MSNBC host Al Sharpton hyped liberal attacks on changes to voting laws as he declared that "Republicans have gone on a rampage," and singled out a recently passed law in North Carolina as the "worst attack on voting rights since the Jim Crow era."
Referring to the recent Supreme Court ruling against part of the Voting Rights Act, Sharpton complained:
Since that ruling, Republicans have gone on a rampage with states all across the South running wild to restrict voting. That includes North Carolina, where any moment now, the Republican governor is expected to sign into law the worst attack on voting rights since the Jim Crow era. This is outrageous.
After bringing aboard Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver as a guest, the MSNBC host accused Republicans of trying to "tak[e] away our right to vote" as he posed the question:
Are Republicans in these states and other states because they're not just southern states changing these laws, now on notice now that the Obama administration is not going to let them get away with taking away our right to vote?
Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Monday, July 29, PoliticsNation on MSNBC:
AL SHARPTON: Tonight's lead: fighting for voting rights. Today the President of the United States called civil rights leaders to the White House to say, "Are you ready to fight back?" I was there in that meeting, and I saw firsthand how the President is determined to hit back against right-wing efforts to block the vote in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to gut the Voting Rights Act.
Since that ruling, Republicans have gone on a rampage with states all across the South running wild to restrict voting. That includes North Carolina, where any moment now, the Republican governor is expected to sign into law the worst attack on voting rights since the Jim Crow era. This is outrageous. This is exactly the kind of blatant attempt to suppress the vote that the Obama administration has promised to fight against.
(ERIC HOLDER, ATTORNEY GENERAL)
SHARPTON: The President and the Attorney General are calling on all of us to wake up, get up, and get active. This is about the fundamental right of our democracy. Fifty years after the march on Washington, we must not, we will not let them turn back the clock.
In the meeting today, Latino leaders, Asian leaders, African-American leaders, women sat together with the President and the Attorney General not for one segment, but for all Americans' right to vote to be protected. It is something Americans can and must unite around, and it should be bipartisan, because it gives everyone the protection of their voting rights.
(...)
SHARPTON: Congressman (Cleaver), let me start with you. Are Republicans in these states and other states because they're not just southern states changing these laws, now on notice now that the Obama administration is not going to let them get away with taking away our right to vote?

LONDON (Reuters) - The dollar climbed off a five-week low and shares edged up on Tuesday as a heavy session of European data and earnings showed early promise before this week's trio of big central bank meetings.
Signs that Spain's recession is easing and a pick-up in German consumer confidence set an upbeat tone ahead of euro zone business and consumer sentiment data later, and meetings of the ECB, U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of England.
It was also one of the busiest days of the European earnings season so far with over 40 of the region's major firms announcing results. <.eu/>
A strong start by French utility EDF and German chip-maker Infineon helped lift the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> share index 0.2 percent as London's FTSE, Frankfurt's DAX and Paris's CAC 40 climbed 0.2-0.3 percent.
MSCI's world index <.miwo00000pus>, which tracks 45 countries, climbed 0.2 percent as European gains filtered through.
In the currency market, the dollar <.dxy> continued to pull away from Monday's five-week low as investors viewed its sharp drop over the last two weeks as a chance to get back in ahead of Tuesday's start of the Federal Reserve's two-day meeting.
"The Dollar Index is rebounding from the 200 moving average, suggesting that a recovery is likely to develop," Morgan Stanley's currency analysts wrote in a note.
"While the market appears to be fully prepared for a more dovish Fed, we expect the dollar to remain data-dependent"
Focus was also on the Australian dollar. It hit a two-week low of $0.9085 after the country's central bank governor said inflation would be no bar to a cut in interest rates and that the currency could fall further.
The euro was flat at $1.3265.
Europe's debt markets also saw a quiet start with Bunds and peripheral bonds all little changed though with the expectation of more action later.
Alongside the heavy slate of data, Italy will sell up to 6.75 billion euros of bonds. The auction is expected to go smoothly although it comes as Silvio Berlusconi faces a Supreme Court ruling that could see him banned from public office, a move that could endanger Italy's shaky coalition government.
In Asian trading, Japan's Nikkei bounced 1.5 percent as the yen eased though stocks elsewhere in the region finished flat as China's central bank's first injection of funds into money markets since February was balanced by some mixed data.

Malaysia?s industry leader BP Healthcare Group and University of Malaya (UM) have signed an agreement to work together in oral and dental research and care as well as community projects to increase dental awareness.
The collaborative initiative pools the expertise and resources of BP Healthcare, which aims to build the country?s largest dental care network, and Malaysia?s premier dental school that has over four decades of history and one of the few overseas training and examination centres recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was sealed by Chevy Beh, BP Healthcare Group executive director, and Professor Dr Rosnah Mohd Zain, dean of the Dentistry Faculty, at the university in Kuala Lumpur today.
?We are privileged to work with the country?s most established institution on dental health. The MoU that we signed today will bring benefit to the two organisations and at the same time, improve the quality of care, research and education in Malaysia,? said Beh.
?Collaborating with UM will allow medical professionals from both sides and dental residents to work closely and identify opportunities on joint research, internship and accelerate the pace of improvement in the field.?
BP Healthcare Group, which is the most diversified healthcare provider in the country, currently has three specialist dental clinics located at the BP Specialist Centres in Glenmarie (Shah Alam), Klang and Ipoh.
The group, through BP Dental Sdn Bhd, will spend RM100 million over the next few years to establish a network of 50 dental clinics and invest in the latest technology to provide comprehensive maintenance, restorative and aesthetic dental care that includes orthodontic treatment, CT scan for treatment planning of dental implants and oral surgery, as well as latest digital imaging system that requires high-end and high cost equipment. - Bernama, July 29, 2013

Producers of farm-to-dog-bowl food say the concept is more about locavorism and sustainability than about pampered pooches.
Heather Rousseau/NPR Heather Rousseau/NPRThe email read: "We signed a contract for farm-to-bowl dog food product development today, I kid you not :)"
The note was from a friend, Wendy Stuart, who consults on food access and sustainability issues. Even so, our first reaction was: really?
It's easy to dismiss the concept as the culinary equivalent of a diamond dog collar or a Versace pet bowl.
But many producers offering farm-to-fido dog food say it's a healthful option for pets that also helps farmers and ranchers while cutting down on food waste. It can also help the environment. For instance, the product Wendy is developing is made from wild blue catfish, an invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay.
Two years ago, Jake Dickson made headlines as one of several New York City butchers selling high-end, locally sourced dog food. Dickson's pet chow is a blend of farmers' market veggies and leftover meats that don't make it into the premium artisanal cuts he sells at his Chelsea Market shop.
Feeding Fido with locally sourced meats and vegetables can get pretty pricey. Dickson's fancy feast will cost you $10 per quart, about enough to feed a 100-pound dog for a day. That translates to $300 a month, for those of you keeping score. Even so, Dickson says about 100 customers each week pick up the gourmet grub.
It is "quite expensive," he says, but his goal isn't to pamper pooches.
"For us, it's all about 100 percent utilization of the animal," Dickson tells The Salt. "If we're going to slaughter it, we want to use every part. And second, if we use every part, we're more profitable as a company."
As Dickson notes, picking up scrap meats for your dog at the local butcher is a tradition with a long history. And with the growth of the locavore movement, meat producers from coast to coast say they're also seeing a boom in demand for local pet food options. Some are even setting up subscription-based "doggie CSAs," or community-supported agriculture.
Dennis Adams and his wife raise free-range sheep, alpaca and chickens at Cota Farms, about 45 miles outside of Columbus, Ohio. When they process their meat, he says, they always have leftovers ? necks and backs of chickens, and sheep hearts. So several years ago, Adams started grinding up this meat and selling it as raw dog food at local farmers markets.
"This is premium, organic meat," Adams tells The Salt. "Dogs are lucky to get it."
Word quickly got out and demand grew. Now, he has 50 subscribers for his raw dog food CSA.
In fact, business grew so rapidly that Adams recruited other ranchers and farmers in the region to contribute their leftover meat ? "there's really nothing else you can do with a beef heart," he says (unless you're a high-end chef into offal).
Over in San Diego, entrepreneur Tasha Ardalan has also recently gotten into the community-supported dog food business. She gathers the season's leftover fruits and vegetables from local farmers who would otherwise have to toss it out.
"The farmers love it," she tells us, and a few have even signed up for her dog food.
The produce gets mixed with meat from local ranchers and sold as a raw, organic dog food patty that costs subscribers of her CSA ? named Foxy Treats ? $4 a pound. "Some customers are a bit skittish about the food being raw," she says. "So I just tell them to bake it."
Ardalan says she consulted with local vets before coming up with her recipes. And getting the mixture right is paramount, says Jennifer Larsen, an assistant professor of nutrition at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Larsen says if you're going to go DIY with your dog food in the name of locavorism, be sure to check in with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. (This is a vet with a specialty in nutrition, not someone with an Internet diploma.)
It's easy to make a recipe that lacks essential nutrients for dogs, she warns. She recently published a study of 200 homemade dog food recipes gathered from vet textbooks, dog care books and the web. Ninety-five percent of these recipes lacked at least one essential nutrient, she found, and more than 80 percent lacked multiple nutrients. Over time, she says, such deficiencies can lead to serious health problems for your barking buddy.
Larsen says many of her clients do source their dog food locally ? a perk of living in California's Central Valley. And some have the luxury of outsourcing the kitchen work involved in cooking for four-legged locavores.
"There are owners that we [design] recipes for," she says, "and they hire professional chefs to [make] our recipes, because they don't have the time to do it themselves."

My new piece begins with an interview with Alan Simpson, who's still hacking away at Congress to get it to pass a grand bargain. It continues with his latest impediment: a conservative push to defund Obamacare implementation in the must-pass Sept. 30-deadlined continuing resolution.
One thing I'd add in this space is that the House version of the letter, while tethered to the Senate letter for PR purposes, isn't entirely as definitive. Republicans signing the House letter agree that "it is imperative, now more than ever, that Congress do everything in its power to halt the implementation of the healthcare law."
Another thing: Activists on the right have zero patience for Republicans who argue that this can't be done. FreedomWorks' Dean Clancy has the latest riposte, to Karl Rove.
What the "Don't Fund It" coalition (led by Sens. Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and others)?is proposing is that?all ObamaCare funding?including autopilot spending?be cut off by means of a legislative "rider" containing specific prohibitory language forbidding?any?Obamacare funding from occurring. This rider would be attached to the CR, widely regarded as a "must-pass" measure.
A contrarian might look at the letter and say, "Hey, this puts the GOP in an even better negotiating position when it comes down to the bill itself." But as I found in the piece, the White House has seen off this gambit before by laughing out loud.

Just about every secondary NCAA violation is stupid, but sometimes those stupid violations are awesome. This is one of those times.
The CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo, also happens to be a Michigan booster, and he also happened to commit a minor NCAA violation on the social media platform he runs.
@WiltonSpeight @GeorgeCampbell0 amazing! #goblue
? dick costolo (@dickc) July 29, 2013
That's Costolo responding to a tweet from Michigan 2014 commit Wilton Speight to recent 2015 commit George Campbell. It's a harmless tweet, but it's also an NCAA violation.
According to one of the roughly billion rules the NCAA has, a booster is not allowed to contact a recruit until after the recruit has signed his letter of intent with the school. Not in person, not on the phone and not on social media.
Whoops.
As for what is likely to happen following this incident, my guess would be nothing. It's not a major violation by any means, but it is an extremely ironic violation.

Four Russian nationals and a Ukrainian have been charged with running a sophisticated hacking organization that over seven years penetrated computer networks of more than a dozen major American and international corporations, stealing and selling at least 160 million credit and debit card numbers, resulting in losses of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Indictments were announced Thursday in Newark, where U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman called the case the largest hacking and data breach scheme ever prosecuted in the United States.
The victims in a scheme that allegedly ran from 2005 until last year included the electronic stock exchange Nasdaq; 7-Eleven Inc.; JCPenney Co.; the New England supermarket chain Hannaford Brothers Co.; JetBlue; Heartland Payment Systems Inc., one of the world's largest credit and debit processing companies, French retailer Carrefour S.A., and the Belgium bank Dexia Bank Belgium.
The indictment says the suspects sent each other instant messages as they took control of the corporate data, telling each other, for instance: "NASDAQ is owned." At least one man told others that he used Google news alerts to learn whether his hacks had been discovered, according to the court filing.
The defendants were identified as Russians Vladimir Drinkman, Aleksander Kalinin, Roman Kotov and Dmitriy Smilianets, and Ukrainian Mikhail Rytikov. Authorities say one suspect is in the Netherlands and another is due to appear in U.S. District Court in New Jersey next week. The whereabouts of the three others were not immediately clear.
The prosecution builds on a case that resulted in a 20-year prison sentence in 2010 for Albert Gonzalez of Miami, who often used the screen name "soupnazi" and is identified in the new complaint as an unindicted co-conspirator. Other unindicted co-conspirators were also named.
Prosecutors identified Drinkman and Kalinin as "sophisticated" hackers who specialized in penetrating the computer networks of multinational corporations, financial institutions and payment processors.
Kotov's specialty was harvesting data from the networks after they had been penetrated, and Rytikov provided anonymous web-hosting services that were used to hack into computer networks and covertly remove data, the indictment said.
Smilianets was the information salesman, the government said.
All five are charged with taking part in a computer hacking conspiracy and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The four Russian nationals are also charged with multiple counts of unauthorized computer access and wire fraud.
The individuals who purchased the credit and debit card numbers and associated data from the hacking organization resold them through online forums or directly to others known as "cashers," the indictment said. According to the indictment, U.S. credit card numbers sold for about $10 each; Canadian numbers were $15 and European ones $50.
The data was stored on computer servers all over the world, including in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, Latvia, the Netherlands, Bahamas, Ukraine, Panama and Germany.
The cashers would encode the information onto the magnetic strips of blank plastic cards and cash out the value, by either withdrawing money from ATMs in the case of debit cards, or running up charges and purchasing goods in the case of credit cards.

For months, bookmakers in Britain, where gambling is legal, have been taking bets on the details of the royal progeny, including sex and date of birth. The boy?s name was the last element to be revealed.
All three of the baby's names were among those favored by betting services. Paddy Power, a popular bookmaker, put the odds of the royal baby being named George at 7 to 4 ? higher than any other name. Alexander and Louis were also among the top contenders, with odds of 9 to 1 and 12 to 1, respectively.
According to a statement released by Kensington Palace earlier today, the boy ? who is now third in line to inherit the British throne ? will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.?
Prince George was born Monday, July 22, at St. Mary?s Hospital in Paddington, west London. The world caught its first glimpse of him the day after, when his parents Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, took him home to Kensington Palace.
The announcement of the name came relatively quickly, according to The New York Times. Normally, the naming of newborn royals takes several days, if not weeks. The royal couple chose the name themselves, said royal officials.
Only hours before the name was announced, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry, the baby?s great grandmother and uncle, visited Kensington Palace to meet the boy for the first time, reports the Canadian Broadcasting Company. Prince George?s great grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was not able to attend the visit, as he is recovering from surgery.
The name George has a long royal heritage, having been the name of 27 monarchs throughout world history, including six British kings. The last king of Britain to be called George was the baby?s great great grandfather, George VI, who ruled from 1936 until 1952.
The boy's other names, Alexander and Louis, also have royal heritage.
The name Alexander has been used by kings for thousands of years, beginning with the Hittites. The most famous was Alexander the Great, from Macedonia. Though Britain has never been ruled by an Alexander, there have been three King Alexanders to rule Scotland, all during medieval times.
Louis, though not a popular name for kings in Britain, has a long history of royal usage on the continent. France, Hungary, and Spain ? among many others ? have all had a ruler named Louis. Arguably the most famous was Louis XIV of France, also known as Louis the Great, who outlived three of his heirs. The new prince has a closer connection to the name than that though: His father Prince William's full name is William Arthur Philip Louis.

Advice about what to do about School and Career Goals - See Post #1 for directions Moderator's Note:This thread is for anyone facing a big decision about your life and school, in general. This is where you may post your story and ask for personal advice about your direction and goals. Ask things like: Should I change schools? If you want to know something about a certain school, you should find the appropriate school thread or find the thread about schools in your country /city and ask there. If you want know where to go to school or what education is needed for a specific career, ask in the career thread. To ask about what career you might be suited to ... there are general threads about that too. Use the serach function using appropriate keywords that are least 4 letters long and search by thread titles only ... or you will get too many results. i 'm now 16 .And i'm thinking to study in a community college next year.

Advice needed - finish college or start career? Hey all!I'm really torn at the moment, and having a hard time figuring out my life right now. I landed the job opportunity of a lifetime this summer, working on the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2" movie as the Shop Coordinator. It's an amazing first job in the industry, and it's sure to lead me to more jobs afterwards if I do a good job, which I am confident that I will. I'm making really good money, and have lots of great perks (my own production cell phone and production car, with gas provided to me). My dilemma is this: should I go back to college in the Fall and finish up my Senior year, or should I just continue down this path right away? I'm nervous that if I go back to school for a year, not as many people will remember me, and it'll hurt my chances of getting as good of a job in this industry again. I really lucked out this time around, and I just don't know if I should risk a degree in film to go immediately into this industry, or go back to school first? Any advice would be most helpful! Thank you. __________________ freja & siri. - aimee |

Photographer Steven Kowalski (Glooko on Reddit) recently shot some wedding pictures for two Star was fan and this is the result of one of these pictures. I don?t know about you, but I don?t think I?d look that calm if I?d be standing in front of a bunch of AT-ATs like this.

H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute
Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital in China have discovered a gene expression signature that may lead to new immune therapies for lung cancer patients. They found that NF-?B, a protein complex known to promote tumor growth, may also have the ability to boost the immune system to eliminate cancerous cells before they harm, as well as promote antitumor responses.
The study appeared in the June 3 issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
NF-?B is a protein complex that controls gene expression. The regulation of NF-?B also plays an important role in regulating the body's immune response to infection. Incorrect regulation of NF-kB has been linked to cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, septic shock, viral infection, and improper immune development.
"New insight into how tumor pathways regulate the anti-tumor immune response may help us to devise new ways for improving immune therapy," said study lead author Amer Beg, Ph.D., senior member of Moffitt's Immunology Program. "Studies are now underway to start a clinical trial to determine whether the novel gene expression signature described in this work may help initiate new and better immunotherapy treatments."
According to Beg, NF-?B proteins regulate key genes involved in immune response, inflammation, cell death and cell growth. Work in his lab is aimed at a better understanding of how NF-?B regulates immune response and how the consequences of impaired regulation of responses are related to disease.
The researchers analyzed the role of NF-?B in lung cancer cells that were used to develop the NF-?B gene signature. Key studies in mice showed that NF-?B can mediate immune rejection of tumors. The studies were then extended to human tumor specimens. "In this study we found that NF-?B activity is strongly associated with immune system T-cell infiltration in lung cancer," explained study co-author Dung-Tsa Chen, Ph.D., member of the Biostatistics Department at Moffitt. "Multiple genes, capable of enhancing T-cell responses, were found in the NF-?B signature. This means that NF-?B, thought of as a tumor promoter, also helps facilitate an immune response."
Their finding that the presence of high levels of NF-?B in lung cancer tumors can act as a suppressor provides new insight into how tumor pathways regulate the anti-tumor response.
"T-cell presence in tumors can be associated with immune surveillance and improved patient survival," explained Beg. "The focus of immune therapy, boosting T cell-induced responses against solid tumors, has shown considerable promise. However, tolerance-inducing mechanisms and the presence of suppressive cell types in the tumor microenvironment can dampen the response to immunotherapy. Our findings provide new insights into beneficial pathways that also operate in tumors and can regulate anti-tumor responses."
