Vic Gundotra says Nik's 'high-end tools and plugins' will survive

After Google effectively killed Sparrow's apps when it purchased the company (they're still available and supported, but don't expect much future development) there was some worry about the future of Nik Software. Well, Vic Gundotra took to Google+ to salve some of those fears.

Earlier this week I proudly welcomed +Nik Software to Google. They've been making pictures more awesome for 17 years, and we're excited to bring Nik's expertise to the entire Google+ community!

I also want to make something clear: we're going to continue offering and improving Nik's high-end tools and plug-ins.

Professionals across the globe use Nik to create the perfect moment in their photographs (e.g., http://goo.gl/aDtkO), and we care deeply about their artistry.

There is one bothersome caveat in that quote: "high-end." Gundotra may be promising a future for Capture NX and Efex Pro, but it's clear that the popular Snapseed doesn't fit that description. Now, he has not expressly announced the death of the Instagram competitor, but it seems to us that the writing is on the wall. The Android camera app may already have a set of friendly filters, but it lacks the simplified sharing and marketing buzz of Facebook's recent acquisition. Don't be surprised if the Snapseed team simply gets folded into Google+ or Android while its creation slowly withers and dies.

Baby Showers: What to Prepare - Anatomical Gift Act

In honor of the new baby and parents-to-be, friends and family members all gather to celebrate at the baby shower. It is not just a day of giving gifts to the future mother and father, but also a day for love, appreciation, and merry-making.

Planning for the baby shower is almost like planning for a birthday party or any other similar event. There are lots of things to consider, such as the numbers of guests, the theme (if there is any), the venue for the party, the food, music, and activities.

First thing?s first, you have to know how many people you are inviting and how many are actually going. The type of venue to get and the amount of food served depends on the number of guests attending. You can choose to have invitation cards sent out to each and include a contact number so as you can confirm who is coming to the party. Once you have your final list, you can then start on looking for the perfect venue for the special day.

If there only a few people you invited, it is best to have the celebration at home. It will save you the money from the booking, and time and effort in looking for such a place. For twenty or more guests, you will need to find a location where it can accommodate that number. Conference rooms would surely suffice. Usually in hotels, they also offer catering services. With that, you can book an already-decorated room and avail of their catering at the same time. At this juncture, you have completed three of your baby shower planning tasks.

You simply cannot have a party without music! So, try to make a playlist that will suit the occasion. You might also want to think of your guests; if most of them are older, they may find it pleasant to hear classical music in comparison to pop or anything else. Depending on your theme (again, if you are planning to have one), your list of songs ought to go with it, too.

To make the celebration livelier, come up with certain activities that your guests can participate in. You can have games for both kids and adults so they won?t get bored, or worse, leave the party. Considering you have tons of things to do now, hiring someone who can assist you in preparing and coordinating these games might be a good option.

Planning for a baby shower is easy when you know what things to take on. On the other hand, if you think this takes a lot of your time, you can always contact a party planner to do it all for you.

Manage Your Time Like a Budget [Time Management]

Manage Your Time Like a BudgetWe all have a limited amount of time to work with, just like our money is finite. If you think in terms of a "time budget," you may be able to use your time better and enjoy your life more.

Dave Lavinsky gives an excellent example on the Growthink blog: You're at the grocery, it's the last week of the month, and the food in your cart will bring you right up to your $400 a month budget. But then you see something on the way to the checkout that you might want, that might taste good or be on sale. Should you go for it? No! Stay within your budget or trade something in your cart for the other item. Lavinsky says:

Your time budget is the same way. When it's 4:55 and you've committed to stop working and go home at 5:00 but there's some nagging task you really want to knock out but would take 30 minutes ? DON'T BUY IT. Don't do it today. Do it tomorrow or some other day.

Go home and enjoy your life. Do something fun or relaxing and stay within your time budget. It can probably wait until later, just like that last-minute item at the store.

Similarly, the next time something's calling out to distract you or waste your time, just remember that you're on a budget.

PFT's Week 3 Picks: Ravens will top Pats

Chicago Bears v Green Bay PackersGetty Images

In Week One, we disagreed on one game.? That was boring.

In Week Two, we differed on two games.? A little less boring.

This week, all hell is breaking loose; MDS and yours truly disagree on six of the 16 games.

Last week was a rough one for me, with a pathetic 7-9 finish.? MDS was 9-7, which gives him the season-to-date lead by one game:? 19-13 to 18-14.

Or, in other words, pathetic.

Here?s hoping for something other than pathetic this weekend.

Giants at Panthers

MDS?s take: Last week my Panthers pick helped me take the season lead over Florio, and I?m tempted to pick the Panthers to beat the Giants in something of a changing of the guard in the NFC. But after the way Eli Manning played in the fourth quarter against the Buccaneers on Sunday, I see the Giants winning a shootout.

MDS?s pick: Giants 34, Panthers 31.

Florio?s take:? The defending champs hit the road for the first time this season, on a short week with a laundry list of injuries.? It all adds up to the Panthers making the most of their rare chance to dance on a national stage, especially if they can stick to the run and withstand Eli Manning?s inevitable late-game push.

Florio?s pick:? Panthers 24, Giants 21.

Rams at Bears

MDS?s take: The Rams have a defense that can bring pressure on Jay Cutler, but Cutler will respond better to the pressure than he did last week against the Packers. (He could hardly respond to the pressure any worse than he did last week against the Packers.) Sam Bradford is off to a strong start, but the Rams are going to fall short here.

MDS?s pick: Bears 23, Rams 20.

Florio?s take:? Jeff Fisher returns to the place where he once played for the best defense in NFL history.? And while his current defense is still a far cry from the ?85 Bears, it?s already a lot better than what the Rams have had in recent years.? Look for the Rams to rattle Cutler and company early, forcing them into more mistakes and temper tantrums.

Florio?s pick:? Rams 27, Bears 24.

Bills at Browns

MDS?s take: So far this season I?ve picked the Bills to win twice and Florio has picked the Bills to lose twice. I?d love to see that pattern continue this week. I may jump off the Bills bandwagon eventually, but not yet.

MDS?s pick: Bills 24, Browns 14.

Florio?s take:? CJ2K2.0 is averaging more than 10 yards per carry.? While the Browns? defense is good enough to keep that number in single digits, the Bills woke up in a big way last Sunday ? and they?ll be ready to carry that momentum from one shore of Lake Erie to another.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 31, Browns 21.

Buccaneers at Cowboys

MDS?s take: The Cowboys looked absolutely terrible on Sunday in Seattle, but I see them bouncing back and Tony Romo having a big game against the same Bucs secondary that just gave up 510 yards to Eli Manning.

MDS?s pick: Cowboys 34, Buccaneers 20.

Florio?s take:? So which Cowboys team is the real Cowboys team?? I?ll go with Week One.? And I?ll hope that the Cowboys are up by a touchdown or less late in the game, so that the team whose owner doesn?t believe in using kneel downs will have a chance to try one against the team whose coach doesn?t believe in honoring kneel downs.

Florio?s pick:? Cowboys 27, Buccaneers 20.

Jaguars at Colts

MDS?s take: The winner of this game is the second-best team in the AFC South ? not that that?s saying much. I believe that team will be the Colts, as Andrew Luck will have his second consecutive strong game.

MDS?s pick: Colts 27, Jaguars 17.

Florio?s take:? The round robin for the first pick in the draft continues.? The Vikings beat the Jags, the Colts beat the Vikings, and it would be fitting for the Jags to now beat the Colts.? But the Colts are better than most realize.? Peyton Manning won only three of his first 16 games; Andrew Luck goes for two out of his first three.

Florio?s pick:? Colts 27, Jaguars 24.

Jets at Dolphins

MDS?s take: The Dolphins? offense looked much better in Week Two than it had in Week One, and the Jets? offense looked much worse in Week Two than it had in Week One. But the Jets are going to bring a lot of heat on Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, and I don?t like Tannehill?s chances of taking that heat.

MDS?s pick: Jets 16, Dolphins 3.

Florio?s take:? Former Miami coach Tony Sparano will find a way to use Tim Tebow more effectively (which should make Jeff Ireland mutter ?asshole? under his breath . . . again), and Dolphins fans will realize that last week?s romp over the Raiders, who traveled cross-country on a short week, isn?t an accurate picture of the current state of the franchise.

Florio?s pick:? Jets 24, Dolphins 17.

49ers at Vikings

MDS?s take: The 49ers look to me like the best team in the league by a wide margin. They should win this one handily, improving to 3-0 with all three wins coming over teams from the NFC North.

MDS?s pick: 49ers 31, Vikings 14.

Florio?s take:? Randy Moss returns for the Metrodome for the first time as a member of the opposing team.? Though it would be even uglier if Brad Childress were still the head coach, it?ll be ugly enough to be a thing of beauty for 49ers fans.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 34, Vikings 13.

Chiefs at Saints

MDS?s take: The team that loses this one will be 0-3 and perhaps the NFL?s single biggest disappointment in the 2012 season. I like Drew Brees to have a big game at home and the Saints to finally get in the win column.

MDS?s pick: Saints 30, Chiefs 20.

Florio?s take:? The Chiefs are desperate and the Saints are desperate.? The edge goes to the home team.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 28, Chiefs 17.

Lions at Titans

MDS?s take: The Titans have been absolutely dreadful this season, and it goes well beyond Chris Johnson: Their offensive line has been terrible and their secondary is riddled with holes. I see Matthew Stafford putting up about 400 yards through the air in this one.

MDS?s pick: Lions 31, Titans 17.

Florio?s take:? The Titans are desperate and the Lions should be.? Again, the edge goes to the home team.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 28, Lions 23.

Bengals at Redskins

MDS?s take: We?ll learn a lot about what kind of team Mike Shanahan has built by the way they recover from last week?s major disappointment in St. Louis. I think the Redskins will bounce back.

MDS?s pick: Redskins 24, Bengals 21.

Florio?s take:? RG3 makes his home debut, as the Bengals continue their trend of losing the games they should lose.

Florio?s pick:? Redskins 30, Bengals 21.

Eagles at Cardinals

MDS?s take: Raise your hand if you picked this one as a Week Two matchup of 2-0 teams. The Cardinals? defense is a lot better than people are giving them credit for, and they?ll force Michael Vick to keep turning the ball over. But the Eagles? defense will have a big game against old teammate Kevin Kolb, too, and I like Philadelphia to win a low-scoring game.

MDS?s pick: Eagles 13, Cardinals 10.

Florio?s take:? Kevin Kolb gets a chance to do to John Skelton what Mike Vick did to Kevin Kolb two years ago, in a game against Mike Vick.? The defense, however, will be the difference.? If Ray Horton?s unit confused Tom Brady, it will turn Mike Vick into a turnover machine.? Wait, he already is one.

Florio?s pick:? Cardinals 17, Eagles 13.

Falcons at Chargers

MDS?s take: In this week?s other battle of 2-0 teams, the Falcons take a long road trip after a short work week. The Falcons? secondary showed that it?s opportunistic on Monday night, but I don?t see Philip Rivers throwing as many bad balls as Peyton Manning did, and the Chargers will improve to 3-0.

MDS?s pick: Chargers 24, Falcons 17.

Florio?s take:? Sure, no one will take the Falcons seriously until they win a playoff game.? But Sunday gives them a chance to make folks take seriously their chances of winning a playoff game this year.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 34, Chargers 27.

Texans at Broncos

MDS?s take: The schedule doesn?t get any easier for the Broncos, heading back home to host the team that most of us think is the best in the AFC. Denver?s run defense may be good enough to contain Arian Foster, but the pass defense is going to struggle against Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, and Owen Daniels.

MDS?s pick: Texans 21, Broncos 20.

Florio?s take:? The Falcons have given the Texans the blueprint for beating the Broncos:? Force Peyton Manning to throw it deep.? The fact that J.J. Watt is ready to swat any and all short throws makes it even more important for Peyton to try to get the ball down the field.? Key word:? try.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 26, Broncos 17.

Steelers at Raiders

MDS?s take: The Steelers looked great on both sides of the ball in Week Two, and the Raiders looked lousy on both sides of the ball in Week Two. This looks like a mismatch.

MDS?s pick: Steelers 28, Raiders 13.

Florio?s take:? Once upon a time, this would have been a great game.? But the Raiders have taken a step back (in the hopes of eventually taking multiple steps forward), and quarterback Carson Palmer will be cringing (again) when he steps up and throws with those Steelers jerseys swarming around his knee.

Florio?s pick:? Steelers 27, Raiders 14.

Patriots at Ravens

MDS?s take: Both of these teams had disappointing losses to NFC opponents last week, but to me the Patriots? loss raised far more questions.? Specifically, it raises the question of what kind of offense New England is going to have while Aaron Hernandez is out. The Patriots are going to have a tough time moving the ball against a good Baltimore defense, and New England is going to have a losing record for the first time since they were 0-1 at the start of the 2003 season.

MDS?s pick: Ravens 17, Patriots 16.

Florio?s take:? Last year?s AFC title game notwithstanding, the Ravens have had the Pats? number lately.? With a suspect offensive line in New England and an improving offense in Baltimore, that continues on Sunday night.

Florio?s pick:? Ravens 20, Patriots 17.

Packers at Seahawks

MDS?s take: The Seahawks looked awfully good against the Cowboys, but I think the same Packers pressure that frustrated Jay Cutler last week is going to frustrate Russell Wilson this week.

MDS?s pick: Packers 28, Seahawks 10.

Florio?s take:? The Green Bay offense isn?t what it used to be, and the Seahawks? defense is better than anyone gives it credit for.? Especially at home.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 28, Packers 27.

Fine Structure of the Iris Muscle in the Japanese Common Newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, with Special Reference to Innervation : Cell Biology - BioStor

ZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE 5: 337-346 (1988) 1988 Zoological Society of Japan Fine Structure of the Iris Muscle in the Japanese Common Newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, with Special Reference to Innervation MlTSUMASA OKAMOTO Department of Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science, Nagoya University, Nagoya 464, Japan ABSTRACT ? The localization and structure of the iridial muscles and associated nerves of the newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) were examined by electron microscopy with some histochemical studies of catecholamine and acetylcholinesterase. The sphincter muscle, which was composed of pigmented smooth muscle cells, was located circumferentially in the pupillary margin of the iris. Sphincter muscle cells formed occasional close contacts with each other by protruding cellular processes. Numerous gap junctions and desmosomes were observed between anterior and posterior pigment epithelium of the iris, but not between muscle cells. Nerve endings formed varicosities and were composed of agranular vesicles and/or granular vesicles. There was no dilator muscle in this species. Prominent circumferential catecholamine fluorescence was observed in the pupillary margin. Acetyl- cholinesterase positive and negative muscle cells and nerve fibers were found within the sphincter muscle region. INTRODUCTION The iris sphincter and dilator muscles, known to be the iris muscle in the mammalian eye, change the size of the pupil and regulate the quantity of light. Studies on the iris muscles have been a fascinating subject from the standpoint of develop- ment and differentiation of the muscle, because these muscles are unique in that the sphincter muscle is the only vertebrate smooth muscle known to be derived from neuroectoderm [1-4] and the dilator muscle has myoepithelial charac- ters [1, 5-6]. They are innervated by an autonomic nervous system [7-10], which is advantageous, in that we can easily detect the action of nerves through miosis and mydriasis of the eye. In addition to morpholgical studies on the iris muscle [1-6, 11-13], numerous pharmacological and elec- trophysiological reports have been made on this nervous system using various kinds of animals [14- 20]. Studies on the fine structure of the iris muscle besides mammals have also been reported [21-24], Accepted September 24, 1987 Received August 7, 1987 but only a few works have been undertaken on amphibian species [25-27]. On the other hand, it has been well known that the newt has a capacity for regeneration from the mid-dorsal margin of the iris after having extir- pated an intrinsic lens. Numerous investigations at the light and electron microscopic level have been made on the process of lens regeneration (for review, see [28]). However, the iris muscle in the newt has so far received almost no attention in terms of the study of lens regeneration, although the sphincter muscle at the pupillary margin would appear to be closely relevant to lens regeneration. There have been no reports on the fine structure of the iris muscle of the Japanese common newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster and no histochemical works on amphibian iridial muscles and nerves. Thus, in the present study, detailed investigations on the fine structure of the iris muscle and some histo- chemical studies on the iridial muscles and associ- ated nerves were made in the adult Cynops pyrrhogaster. In addition, the present study also seeks to obtain basic information on the iris muscle, which presumably has some relevance to lens regeneration.

Viswanath remade Siri Siri Muvva (1976) in Hindi as Sargam introducing Jayaprada to Bollywood in 1979. The film became a huge hit and she became an overnight star there as well. She earned her first Filmfare nomination as Best Actress but couldn?t capitalize on her success since she couldn?t speak Hindi.

1980s:
In 1981, she starred in the critically acclaimed 47 Natkal in which Chiranjeevi played negative shaded protagonist. Director K. Vishwanath relaunched her again in Hindi films, with the hit film Kaamchor where she spoke Hindi fluently for the first time. Saagara Sangamam released in 1983 proved to be a milestone in her career, Starring Kamal Hassan, the film won her lot of accolades including Filmfare Award for Best Actress ? Telugu. Jaya Prada made a successful team, not just with Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra, but also with her immediate screen rival Sridevi, with whom she has acted in about a dozen films. Their hit Telugu film Devata (1982) where they played sisters who made big sacrifices for each other, was remade into the hit Hindi film Tohfaa (1984). These films endeared Jaya Prada to the traditional conservative section of film goers and she amassed a huge female fan following as well. Although, she has acted in Bengali films, she has never worked for Ray. As she became involved in her political career since 1994, at the age of 32, her involvement with films reduced.

In 2002, she stepped into the Marathi film industry by being a guest in the movie Aadhaar. Thus far, she acted in eight languages and has completed 300 films during a 30-year film career. She started playing mature roles in 2004. She also owns the Jaya Prada Theater in Chennai. In 2011, she returned to Malayalam screens with a strong role in Pranayam, alongside Mohanlal and Anupam Kher. She essayed the role of ?Grace? in this film which won her critical acclaim and several awards. Her Kannada film Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (Sangolli Rayanna) which sees her donning the historical role of Kittur Chennamma is slated for release in the later half of 2012.

Political career:
The suave and soft-spoken Jayaprada had joined the TDP in 1994 on the invitation of TDP founder N T Rama Rao, on the eve of the assembly elections then. And she rose quickly in the ranks. At that time itself, there was speculation that she would contest the polls but she preferred not to make her electoral debut although she was offered a seat by NTR. She campaigned in several constituencies in 1994. When NTR became the Chief minister in 1994, he appointed one of his sons-in-law Nara Chandrababu Naidu as the Revenue Minister. Soon after the formation of the government, NTR?s health started deteriorating, and in response to the growing influence of his wife, Lakshmi Parvati, on the political decisions of NTR, Chandrababu Naidu convinced a majority of the TDP MLAs to elect him as the chief minister. Since most of the legislators had gone over to his side, the Anti Defection Law did not apply and the Telugu Desam Party label passed on to the Chandrababu Naidu faction. During this period, Jayaprada too joined the Chandrababu Naidu faction of the party. She was nominated to the Rajya Sabha representing Andhra Pradesh in 1996. She also held the post of Telugu Mahila President.

Following differences with party Supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, she left TDP to join Samajwadi Party and contested from Rampur parliamentary Constituency in UP during the last General election in 2004 and got elected with a margin of more than 85000 votes. During her campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in 2009, she was issued a notice by the Election Commission for violating the code of conduct by distributing bindis to women in Rampur?s Swar locality. On 11 May 2009, Jaya Prada alleged that senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was distributing nude pictures of her. She was re-elected with a margin of more than 30,000 votes. After she came out in open support of the former General Secretary of Samajwadi Party, Amar Singh, Jayaprada was expelled from the party on February 2, 2010 citing reasons such as indulging in activities inimical to its political interests and damaging its image. Jayaprada was accused by Samajwadi party members for infiltration into the party of capitalist and communal forces, which threatened to derail it from its Samajwadi moorings and damage its secular character.

Personal life:
In 1986, she married producer Srikant Nahata, who was already married to Chandra and had 3 children. This marriage stirred a lot of controversy, especially since Nahata did not divorce his current wife and had children with his first wife after marrying Jaya Prada.? Jaya Prada and Srikanth have no children together, but she expressed desire to have children.

Swedlund takes over as director of Rec Center | The Optimist

By Matthew Sloan
Posted on September 18, 2012 | News | No comment

A year ago, the Money Student Wellness and Recreational Center was the focal point of buzz around campus. But with a new man at the top, the Rec Center may be improving even more this year.

Joel Swedlund will be taking over as the executive director of the Royce and Pam Money Recreation and Wellness Center.

In June, Swedlund left the McGlothlin Campus Center, where he had been helping behind the scenes for years with the Center?s operations.

Although his office has only moved a few buildings away, the impact of this change will be felt throughout the ACU community, especially in Student Life.

The change will add a unique element to the growing connection between the Rec Center and intramural sports. As Kenli Edwards, director for intramural sports said, the students will feel an immediate change in the Rec Center.

?The students might notice a more student-welcomed environment,? Edwards said. ?They might not notice that Joel is now in that role, but they will be able to feel more welcome.?

Though Swedlund will bring fresh energy to Student Life and will attempt to have a positive impact on the indoor sports, he insists that students will not be hindered by the changes at the top.

?Everything will remain the same,? Swendlund said. ?Intramurals does not directly report to this office, though we partner a lot of course. But nothing should change this year from last year. ?

Edwards and Swedlund have to be in constant communication to execute events such as Rec Fest when thousands of students head to the Rec Center looking for a good time.

The Rec Center plays an ever-expanding role in Student Life, hosting basketball, soccer, volleyball and many other sports on the intramural calendar. The Rec Center is a popular hang out spot for members of the ACU community, and the busyness has been enough to keep Swedlund on his toes.

?It is definitely busier because of my change in role,? Swedlund said. ?We are still kind of in transition, looking to add some new personnel. We have changed the staffing model here, so we are trying to work through that.?

RetroBall: 4-player LED Pong on Kickstarter

Featured

A new Kickstarter project hopes to create a fun bit of nostalgia with this LED-powered Pong table. It's very much the Pong you know and love, but built into a handy enclosure and made for up to four players.

If you were born early enough to play the original Pong, you likely remember its addictive simplicity. RetroBall aims to replicate that experience with its new table: just a big bank of LEDs and a knob with which?each player controls their paddle.

RetroBall is actually a refinement of an earlier project by Brad Slattery called the Super Pong Table, which you can also build yourself if you've got the parts. In fact, if you want to save a little money, you can order the RetroBall table disassembled and put it together on your own.

The whole project will be open source, but those behind it need some cash to get the first run of the tables out the door, which is why they're running a Kickstarter campaign. A bunch of LEDs and a couple circuit boards don't sound too expensive, but once you factor in assembly, packaging, and shipment from China, the money starts adding up when you're making hundreds or thousands?of units.

There's a bit more information at the website for Slattery's other projects. He and his collaborator are hoping to raise $30,000 over the next few weeks, so consider pledging at Kickstarter if you like the idea of the project.

Who is more deserving of a Night of Champions rematch: Cena or Del Rio?

John Cena and Alberto Del Rio

John Cena and Alberto Del Rio are never on the same page, but both were seemingly in agreement that Night of Champions could have gone a whole lot better. The last-minute reinstatement of World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus? Brogue Kick would ultimately spell certain doom for The Mexican Aristocrat, while the controversial conclusion to the Cenation leader?s WWE Title bout with CM Punk ended in a draw ? with Punk retaining the title.

Now, Cena isn?t one to complain about circumstance. As Cena was pinning Punk at Night of Champions, his own shoulders were also flat on the mat, which resulted in a rarely seen double pinfall. Cena arrived on Raw with a purpose, not to chastise referee Chad Patton or to make excuses, but to give The Second City Savior an opportunity to definitively show he is ?The Best in the World? by granting Cena a WWE Title rematch that very night on Raw. Cena?s willingness to compete was admirable, especially considering that The Cenation Commander-in-Chief was likely still reeling from the previous night, when Punk laid out Cena by hitting him with the WWE Title itself.
(MATCH RESULTS | PHOTOS)

Meanwhile, Del Rio strolled into the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn., ready for a rematch as well. Feeling victimized by SmackDown General Manager Booker T?s reinstatement of Sheamus? Brogue Kick mere moments before the World Heavyweight Title Match at Night of Champions, The Mexican Aristocrat felt another World Heavyweight Title Match was owed to him.
(MATCH RESULTS | PHOTOS)

Not ?skipping? a beat, Raw General Manager AJ Lee restored order on the red brand, acknowledging that both Cena and Del Rio deserve second chances, and elected to combine both of the Night of Champions main events to create a tag team ?super main event? on Raw. At the end of the night, it would be Cena & Sheamus vs. Del Rio & Punk. Ms. Lee affirmed that a victory in this contest would go a long way in determining which Superstar is most worthy of another title match.
(PHOTOS | COMPLETE RAW COVERAGE)

It was Cena who would score a victory for his team by pinning Punk, thereby presumably bringing him one step closer to a WWE Championship opportunity. However, as Cena had Punk?s shoulders flat to the canvas, the official failed to notice the WWE Champion?s foot on the ropes ? a tactic that would have broken the referee?s count had the official seen it. Just 24 hours after a debatable call favored The Second City Savior, Cena reaped the benefits of controversial officiating.

The conclusion of AJ Lee?s ?super main event? raised many questions, but one immediately comes to mind: Is it John Cena or Alberto Del Rio who truly deserves a rematch in the wake of Night of Champions?

Cena failed to attain the WWE Title thanks to a fair? but debatable call by the official, but it?s arguable that the Cenation leader is far more deserving of a rematch. After all, in similar situations, championship bouts have continued after a draw. Want proof? Look no further than the 60-Minute WWE Iron Man Match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XII, which was ordered to resume after a time-limit draw (resulting in HBK?s first WWE Championship reign). Had AJ Lee made a similar ruling, Cena could very well be enjoying his 11th WWE Title reign.

But what of Del Rio? The egotist?s prime complaint on Raw was that the timing of Booker T?s reinstatement of the Brogue Kick on Sunday night was unfair, and that Del Rio was caught completely off-guard as he was getting ready to challenge The Great White for the illustrious World Heavyweight Title. If Del Rio had been prepared for Sheamus? signature maneuver ? and more importantly, if the Brogue Kick had remained banned ? Night of Champions might have been cause for celebration for the well-heeled Superstar. Then again, Sheamus similarly felled Del Rio with the Brogue Kick at Money in the Bank, and Del Rio had ample time to prepare for the maneuver on that occasion. There?s no concrete evidence that Sheamus and Del Rio?s Night of Champions bout would have gone any differently, Brogue Kick ban or no.

Nevertheless, it?s ultimately up to AJ Lee and Booker T to determine whether Cena or Punk ? or both or neither ? will receive title opportunities in the near future. But what does the WWE Universe think? To weigh in on this issue, take the poll by clicking here.

High-tech product announcements this fall

It's high season for consumer electronics. Apple, Nintendo and other manufacturers of various gadgets are unveiling their holiday lineups. Add to that products surrounding a new version of Windows coming out next month.

Here's a recap of the announcements so far:

? Sept. 4: Microsoft Corp. releases the first major update to its server operating system since 2009, a prelude to releasing Windows 8 to consumers in October. Microsoft says Windows Server 2012 adds features that make it easier to manage large clusters of servers in data centers remotely.

? Sept. 5: Nokia Corp. unveils its first phones running the next version of Windows. The company didn't reveal prices and says only that the Windows Phone 8 devices will be available in the fourth quarter "in select markets." The two devices are under Nokia's Lumia brand.

Motorola Mobility, under new owner Google Inc., announces three smartphones borrowing the Razr brand, the name of the hit clamshell phone from 2004. The $99 Razr M goes on sale in Verizon Wireless stores on Sept. 13. Two higher-end models will come later.

? Sept. 6: Amazon.com Inc. announces four new Kindle Fire tablet computers as it steps up competition with Apple Inc. and its iPad. Two of the models have screens nearly as large as the iPad's, at lower prices. Those will start shipping in November, while the smaller, 7-inch models will start selling Sept. 14. Amazon also refreshes its line of stand-alone e-readers.

? Sept. 10: Toys R Us says it plans to launch its own Android tablet computer aimed at children. Called Tabeo, it will start selling on Oct. 21 for $150. The 7-inch touch-screen tablet will come with 50 apps selected for children, including such games as "Angry Birds" and "Fruit Ninja" and a book app called istorybooks. Toys R Us sells other electronics including the iPad, but this is its first store-brand tablet.

? Sept. 11: Google releases a new YouTube app for the iPhone and the iPad as Apple prepares to release a new iPhone model and a software update that displaces the video service as a built-in program. The changes are being made because Google Inc. and Apple Inc. didn't renew a five-year licensing agreement.

? Sept. 12: Apple unveils a bigger, lighter iPhone, with an ability to connect to faster data networks known as 4G. The iPhone 5 goes on sale in the U.S. on Sept. 21. Apple also refreshes the iPod Nano and the iPod Touch and introduces a new type of headphone called EarPods, which are meant to fit comfortably in more people's ears.

? Sept. 13: Nintendo says its new Wii U game machine will go on sale in the U.S. on Nov. 18, starting at $300. It also announces an entertainment component called Nintendo TVii. The service collects all the ways users have to watch movies, TV shows and sports, such as through cable TV, Hulu and Netflix.

? Sept. 14: Advance orders for Apple's new iPhone begin. Delivery times climb quickly, suggesting heavy demand. Apple says orders topped 2 million in 24 hours, more than double the amount for last year's iPhone.

Gigalopolises: Urban Land Area May Triple by 2030

Suburbs, slums and city centers may grow by more than a million square kilometers?much of it now home to wildlife

las-vegas-growth URBAN GROWTH: If present trends continue, urban areas may triple in size--much as Las Vegas grew over the last several decades as evidenced by these satellite photos. Image: Courtesy of NASA

More than half of the world's expected nine billion people will live in giant urban expanses by 2030 as cities and their hinterlands occupy an additional 1.2 million square kilometers, thereby tripling in size. That's an additional 1.35 billion people living in cities, suggesting that urban areas that currently occupy roughly 3 percent of the planet's surface will continue to expand. By comparison, urban areas increased by just 58,000 square kilometers between 1970 and 2000.

In new work published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, urban environment researcher Karen Seto of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and her colleagues first divided the global land area into discrete parcels and, using predicted gross domestic product growth, population growth and urban land area cover in 2000, they projected which parcels had a high or low probability of succumbing to citification over the next few decades. Using that model, 1.2 million square kilometers of land have probabilities higher than 75 percent of becoming citified and nearly six million square kilometers have some probability of going urban.

"More than half of the urban land cover on the planet by 2030 has yet to be built," Seto explains. "The expansion of urban areas will have a direct impact on biodiversity hot spots."

Fifty-five percent of that expansion would come from massive urbanization in India and China?a trend that has been growing in recent decades. For example, a megalopolis similar to the urban corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., in the U.S. is likely to form between Hangzhou and Shenyang in China. But the fastest urbanization is predicted to occur in newly developing regions in Africa, such as the coast of west Africa along the Gulf of Guinea and the shores of Lake Victoria farther south, encompassing Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, among other regions.

This may be bad news, in some cases, for the rich array of plants, animals and microscopic life that also inhabit Earth. The Eastern Afromontane, Guinean forests of west Africa and Western Ghats of India, along with Sri Lanka, are all home to such biodiversity?as well as projected to undergo rapid urban expansion that will encroach on the territory of already endangered amphibians, birds and mammals. Seto and her colleagues project the worst impacts of urban growth to occur in Central and South America.

In addition, such land use change is likely to result in even more of the greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change, according to the new analysis. An estimated 1.38 billion metric tons of carbon could be released as forest transforms to roads, buildings and homes. As it stands, the world's cities bear responsibility for at least 70 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. "We need to be more deliberate as a society about how we want urban places to become what they serve for humanity," Seto argues. "Too often, urban expansion is haphazard."

This is not just bad news for animals or the atmosphere, of course. Haphazard urbanization can also ill serve human inhabitants cut off from supplies of clean water or food. And the impact of urbanites is not confined to city limits; a typical Australian from Melbourne or Sydney requires greenhouse gas emissions, water diversion and land use from the entire continent. "Cities have always relied on their hinterlands and other distal places for resources from food and fuel to waste assimilation," the researchers wrote.
